Scammers, Fake Profiles, and AI-Generated Work—The Indie Hacker’s Hiring Struggle
Upwork a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
If you’re bootstrapping a startup or growing a side project, hiring online feels like a shortcut to speed up progress. Need a landing page? A quick Python script? A VA to clean up your data? Just hop on Upwork or Fiverr, and you’ll have someone working within hours.
At least, that’s the dream. The reality? It’s getting harder than ever to find real talent—and AI is making it worse.
How LLMs Are Making Hiring Harder
I recently hired a freelancer for basic data entry. Instead of doing the work manually, they dumped my data into an LLM and pasted the results into my spreadsheet—except the AI hallucinated half the fields.
And this is becoming more common. Over the years, I’ve:
✅ Found top-tier freelancers I still work with today
❌ Been scammed by fake agencies pretending to be individuals
❌ Caught "developers" using automation to bill fake hours
❌ Seen Upwork accounts bought and sold on the dark web
But now, AI-generated profiles, fake expertise, and low-quality LLM work make hiring even harder.
- Proposals look amazing—but were AI-generated. Many freelancers now use ChatGPT to craft polished responses.
- Fake expertise is harder to spot. AI can generate sample code, a fake GitHub history, or entire writing portfolios.
- Even basic tasks are faked. Data entry, product research, and even coding—all done poorly with AI.
- AI-generated work is risky. Hallucinations, surface-level results, and misinformation are common.
Hiring Smart as an Indie Hacker
If you’re building solo, you must be able to spot scams before they waste your time and money. Here’s what’s worked for me:
📌 Profile Red Flags: Before You Hire
Not all fake freelancers look the same, but here are patterns I’ve noticed:
🚩 Suspiciously similar profiles - Copy-pasted bios with slight changes across multiple freelancers.
🚩 Lots of jobs without feedback- Often means they refunded clients who threatened to leave a bad review.
🚩 Many or most jobs marked ‘Private’ - This hides bad reviews or fake jobs.
🚩 A small number of high-value jobs- Could be inflating earnings through fake contracts.
🚩 Does the job history make sense? - If a freelancer has a $10,000 contract for "basic logo design," something’s off.
🚩 Check the company posting the job. - If they’ve hired 10K freelancers but only paid out $2,000 total. RUN!!
🎯 After Hiring: How to Avoid Wasting Time & Money
Once they’re working, spotting bad freelancers early is key:
✅ Video chat is non-negotiable. - Scammers will refuse or make excuses. If they won’t hop on a call, move on.
✅ Check real-world contributions. - Developers should have consistent GitHub activity, not just random AI-generated repos. Writers should have real bylines, not just "ghostwritten" claims.
✅ Daily updates are mandatory. - If they disappear for days and suddenly "finish" the project, it’s AI or outsourced work.
✅ Check in early, check in often. - The sooner you catch issues, the less time (and money) you lose.
✅ Disable manual time tracking. - Many freelancers use automation tools to rack up "idle" hours. Use fixed-price contracts or tracked hours with proof of work.
✅ Fire fast. - If they mislead you once, they’ll do it again. No second chances.

LLMs aren’t going away. Freelancer platforms will only get worse before they get better.. Some freelancers aren’t even trying to scam—they just think they can use AI and then charge human rates.
