Small changes to increase the speed of decision making

I built a machine learning team and we struggled to make decisions quickly.

We were a new team, in a new organization, building a new product.

There was a lot of uncertainty.

Not to mention, I was:

• Dealing with politics
• Juggling multiple projects
• Still building the team culture

It was utterly exhausting.

So exhausting, we almost failed to deliver the product.

Then, I realized we could improve the way we make decisions.

So, we did.

Once we made a few small changes, decisions were easier to make:

• No more uncertainty
• No more working until 9 pm
• No more delays in delivery

Instead, I focused on leaving every meeting with a decision:

• Be present
• Stay focused
• Come prepared

Simple but effective.
