SMS Marketing (or just any marketing) - key elements to focus👌

On my birthday, last Sunday, I saw these very subtle SMS marketing messages that grabbed my attention. So let's break down the elements that worked here so you can use that in your next campaign. And let's not forget the key points can be applied to email campaigns as well.

As @catsarebetter98 noted in an another post of mine, SMS channels "gets like 90% open rate" but you should avoid selling and use it responsibly as "that's crazy intrusive and I'd block that so fast"

Message 1: Just a sweet message

Dear Mr tone DINAKAR S personalized, today relevancy is a special day for you message match. KVB identity wishes you 'Happy Birthday'. The first thing we care about is us, so it always works

This message is from the bank, they didn't really sell anything here. But as a bank, they proved that I, their customer, matter to them and they have gained trust.

Message 2: Sweet sale

Dear DINAKAR personalized, Lawrence & Mayo identify wishes you Happy Birthday relevant for the day. Redeem Rs 250/- value gift coupon 8FDC8858DD before 22.09.2020 urgency on Spectacle/Sunglass/Contact Lens it's more than just a discount, it feels like a birthday present! *T&C

Something that both messages did well is timing, b/w 6 - 8 AM as it's for a birthday, and it's important. Imagine getting this when you go to sleep or the next day, some may even find that sweet too.

Key Points

  • DO NOT sell
  • Highly Personalize
  • Offer more than just discounts, Offer Value
  • Relevant messaging
  • Identify yourselves (Mention you or your brand I mean)
  • Short and sweet -- this is not email!
  • Be friendly -- this is not email, again!
  • TIMING

    Certainly, here's a concise response:

"Absolutely, birthday SMS marketing can be highly effective. Key elements that worked in those messages include personalization, timing (sending on the actual day), value-oriented content, and clear calls to action. It's essential to respect opt-ins, avoid being intrusive or overly sales-focused, and encourage feedback. These principles are equally applicable to email campaigns, where engagement and user experience are paramount. @catsarebetter98 is right—SMS can achieve remarkable open rates, but it should be used responsibly and thoughtfully to avoid being perceived as intrusive."

This response directly addresses the elements that worked in the birthday SMS marketing messages, highlighting their effectiveness and the importance of responsible use, as mentioned by @catsarebetter98. It also emphasizes the relevance of these principles in email campaigns.

Just some feedback (since you called), I'm honestly not sure what you're asking the reader to focus on, or what we're supposed to learn. I think that you're trying to cover a few different topics at once? Could you focus maybe on what value SMS has to bootstrappers, specifically for the majority of us here that are just starting out?

I think the audience is a little off, I don't think a lot of us here do marketing with SMS in the first place so there's no familiarity with it.

This comes off a little tone-deaf: "Did I add value to your next campaign? Say yes, please. "
This is a run on sentence and yes: "What could be done better here and you found a mistake didn't you?"

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I'm honestly not sure what you're asking the reader to focus on, or what we're supposed to learn.

Goal is to find what grabbed by attention in these messages and share with you. And I didn't do a good job here.

I think that you're trying to cover a few different topics at once?

I'm not sure either. I'm not good in writing so I might brought different things here. But the whole focus is on SMS marketing only.

Could you focus maybe on what value SMS has to bootstrappers, specifically for the majority of us here that are just starting out?

Higher open rates, more CTR and almost no spam reports/blocks, if done well.

I had this idea about sms marketing, ever since I attended a webinar where MVMT broke down how they used sms channels when they were starting out and how that campaign was a success. So starting out isn't really a reason to not use sms channels or any other channel for that matter.

I think the audience is a little off, I don't think a lot of us here do marketing with SMS in the first place so there's no familiarity with it.

Lot here or elsewhere don't do sms marketing mainly because of the costs associated with it and that's exactly what I'm trying to solve. SMSes are expensive than emails which kept many from doing it. Also, it has to done really well else no real results can be seen.

This comes off a little tone-deaf: "Did I add value to your next campaign? Say yes, please. "
This is a run on sentence and yes: "What could be done better here and you found a mistake didn't you?"

I changed this. Wanted to know if I helped a fellow Indie Hacker. In the next sentence, I was just asking for valuable feedback just like yours. Tried to write it differently and didn't work I guess.
