So many different domain name extentions, is there a norm for apps?
So i have a name for the application I want to use, and I am at the point where i want to get the domain names and even if it is just to park them for now but we know that initially it can get costly when picking up all variations (plus the back and forth that will go with when trying to get one you really want if its already been taken)
Are there any norms that everyone gravitates towards? *.io, *.app, *.com - I feel like it is not just a coincidence that the major and most use certain ones but am i in the wrong for take one becuase of past experience from what i see or will that affect me in the long run?
Looking forward to hearing about your reasoning for picking a certain domain extention for your application or if it doesnt even matter as much to you?
.com is the obvious #1 choice if you can, but almost all of good ones are taken! You see a lot of the big tech companies start at .io or .co and then once they ‘make it’ they buy the .com. For example, Segment and Intercom were both .io back in the day. Right after a large round of funding one of the first thing they did was secure the .com.
In the end, it all comes down to look and feel of a domain. .app and .club are on the rise as well.

I think your choice depends partly on your target market.
If you're aiming for a very tech-aware audience (developers, startups, online marketing people), then an alternative TLD is okay. The right one might even help define your brand (I went with
.devbecause my product is for tech blogs).On the flip side, if you're selling to traditional businesses or laggards, stick with a
.comeven if that means you have to use a longer domain name.I've wasted so much money on domains I never use. Now I basically just try and buy .com and .co.uk (I live in the UK) domains for projects.
If someone wanted www.mydomain.app, then fine. I don't think many real users accidentally type .app TLDs.

.io
.com
.co.(XX)
I never use:
.co
I don't think it matters that much I use .me and I used .io before and they work fine!
I think .io .app and .ai are all good options
I was worried about the cost to the idea of losing a domain name and i though its silly to expect wonders when in realisty most companies also change names and its common and its a resource of time i waisting thinking about this. a cheaper one for now or getting it hosted is a start and i will have a look at the options there and spend my time but Thanks to all that weighed in, it helped alot and made me realise i dont need to fixate too much on it, get something to have a means to display and host and as things proggress, worry about it then. I think the best choice is either a one-word domain name with a weird extension or multiple words domain name with a
