So Many People Choose the Wrong IT Certification First....

A lot of people enter the IT certification world with the wrong starting point.

Not because they are careless, but because most of the advice around certifications pushes popularity before fit. Someone sees a high-paying cloud role, a cybersecurity roadmap, or a list of “top certs for 2026” and assumes that the most talked-about certification must also be the best first one.

That usually creates problems much earlier than people expect.

One of the biggest mistakes is choosing a certification that is too advanced for their current level. A certification might look exciting on paper, but if the learner does not yet have the basic understanding needed to follow the topics confidently, the study process quickly turns frustrating. Instead of building momentum, they spend weeks feeling lost.

Another issue is choosing based on salary headlines rather than actual direction. A certification should help someone move toward a realistic next step, not just chase the most attractive title on social media. If someone has no real interest in security, forcing a cybersecurity path because it sounds valuable often leads to poor motivation and weak long-term consistency.

I also think many people underestimate how much the first certification shapes confidence. A good first certification does more than add a badge. It helps the learner understand how to study, how to manage technical information, and how to build belief that progress is possible. A bad first choice can do the opposite. It can make someone feel like they are not capable, when the real problem was simply poor sequencing.

The better starting point is usually not the most impressive certification. It is the one that matches a person’s current knowledge, career direction, and ability to stay consistent long enough to finish what they started.

That is why the “best certification” question is often the wrong question.

A better question is: what certification gives this person the best chance to learn well, finish strong, and build from there?
