Success On Product Hunt Is Worthless - So Stop Wasting Your Time On It

For most indiehackers, Product Hunt (PH) is the holy grail.

Tons of potential customers with wallets at the ready - just waiting for your product to launch.

But the problem is that these potential customers are virtually worthless to your business after launch week.

The vast majority of those on PH are early adopters - they jump on every shiny new thing because it's, well, shiny and new.

But early adopters are worthless.

They aren't indicative of any actual demand amongst those who you will actually be selling to for the rest of your startup's life.

What's more, they'll likely churn very quickly...

Case in point - draft.co launched on PH and made it to the front page - peaking at number 3. This brought in a few thousand dollars in revenue, but the PH customers churned at a rate of 50% (the churn rate for their non PH customers is around 10%).

Does this mean you shouldn't launch on PH?

Of course not. There's nothing wrong with using PH to generate some revenue - but don't be fooled into thinking that success on PH means that your startup is successful or will be a success.

In practical terms - the pressure should be off you! Don't spend too much time fretting and worrying about your PH launch. If you decide to launch on PH, then just get it done as quickly as possible - the results are largely irrelevant to your startup's long term success.

I disagree with this and I think that most others do as well. A lot of times early adopters are indicative of there being demand from non-early adopters as well. And even if there isn't, if you can truly address a pain point that early adopters have, even if the market is small, it's often big enough to make you a life-impacting amount of money.

I believe this argument is valid, but it may overlook products that haven't yet been released in beta. Also, it's important to remember that promoting a product on Product Hunt isn't just about acquiring new users, but also about gaining exposure. If you're able to catch the attention of the right person, they may discover your product and share it with their network, such as through a blog post or word-of-mouth recommendations. This can help your product gain momentum and reach a wider audience.

      Hey,

Oh absolutely it can certainly capture attention. The point I want to make is that it's not worth obsessing over or thinking that PH is necessary for success.
