on September 3, 2026, Suno introduced download limits. shortly after, every current model gets retired.
official framing: "new models, in partnership with the music industry, better than anything before."
translation: the majors sued Suno hard enough to force them to the table. what comes out of that table isn't built for us. it's built for the people who wanted Suno dead.
anyone who's used "safe" licensed models from competitors already knows what this looks like. "make a rock song" — blocked, too close to Band X. "make something classical" — blocked, some estate. the creative space gets walled in and the wall is called licensing fear.
the clearest tell that this isn't an upgrade? all current models are being shut down. you only kill what's legally exposed. this isn't a product update. it's evidence removal with a UI.
this has happened before. MP3.com was where independent artists proved they didn't need labels. UMG bought it in 2000 and turned it unrecognizable overnight. someone in the thread was the number one ranked rapper in Cleveland on MP3.com until it got taken down 💀 same playbook. different decade. different tool.
and the economics make zero sense any other way. Pro users get thousands of credits. can generate hundreds of songs. but can only download 20. you can create. you just can't own what you created.
wtff. Shh.
. that's a settlement condition passed directly onto users who had nothing to do with the litigation.
Suno made the deal. Suno passed the cost onto paying customers. that's on them. but the tools letting ordinary people make music are being systematically taken apart by the same industry that spent thirty years deciding what music is allowed to be.
and that's bigger than any single platform.
