The 30-Minute VPS Test Most Founders Never Run

If your SaaS runs on a single VPS, try this thought experiment.

It’s 2:17am.

Your app is down.

You log in and see:

Disk at 100%.
Nginx failing to start.
Users emailing.

Now ask yourself:

Can I fully restore production in 30 minutes?

Not “probably.”
Not “I think so.”

Actually restore it.

Most founders can’t.

Not because they’re careless —
because they’ve never tested recovery under pressure.

Here’s the simple 30-minute test:

  1. Spin up a fresh VPS.
  2. Restore from your latest backup.
  3. Point a temporary domain to it.
  4. Confirm the app works.
  5. Time yourself.

If you’ve never done this once, you don’t have a backup.

You have a hope.

The difference between stable SaaS and stressful SaaS isn’t scaling.

It’s recoverability.

When was the last time you actually tested a full restore?
