The bug that was hiding behind my fix

Spent a week convinced my problem was bad copy. Wasn't even close.

Numbers going in: ~1 subscriber, 0 sales, landing page at 0% conversion on 8 visits. Not great. My theory was the copy was killing trust, it literally said "steal the exact triggers top brands use," which is the opposite of what I actually believe. So I rewrote it. Honest, added a cover image, 3 bullets on what's inside. Felt like a real fix.

Then my email tool's free trial ended mid-week and turns out the free plan doesn't do automation anymore at all. Had to migrate my whole welcome sequence to a new platform from scratch, annoying timing. But while rebuilding it there, I found the actual problem. The button that's supposed to send people the free guide was linking straight to my $47 product instead. No idea how long it had been like that. Maybe since day one.

So anyone who actually made it through my funnel, expecting a free guide, landed on a paywall.

The copy wasn't the problem. One link was, and it was doing the exact opposite of what it said.

Lessons, roughly in order of how dumb I feel about them:

  • the problem you can see isn't always the one that matters
  • test your own funnel start to finish like you've never seen it before, not just the parts you're proud of
  • bugs like this don't complain, people just quietly leave and you never find out why

Funnel's fixed and tested now. Not touching it again for a couple weeks, letting it actually run.

Anyone else spent way too long fixing the wrong thing before finding the real bug?
