Hi indie hackers!
I recently decided to create a new extension for Google Chrome. But which particular extension will be in demand among users? I decided to collect data on existing applications.
For this reason, yesterday I gathered data about 20,000+ extensions. And since I have some data about extensions that I gathered in January I can calculate the growth of installs since the beginning of the year.
The top 10 extensions by growth from the beginning of the year:
Very interesting numbers.
For the next steps, I want to match popular extensions with low ratings. There could be good insights.
By the way, I am tracking top 100 extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Opera on https://extensionrank.com
I just finished building SaaS around filtering chrome extensions. https://webstoreinsight.com/how-to-use
Great product! How sales are going?
Thanks! It is up for less than 24 hours, with no sales so far.
nice job! Have you had any sales luck since launch?
I have a crawler collecting data on new extensions since January 2018 IIRC. Google doesn't surface these truly new extensions since they tend to be less marketable (poor pics, low user counts, no ratings) but to me they are interesting because I can see early on what categories people are targeting and what the dev journey looks like before you have thousands of users. I currently have data on 185K extensions (store listing meta data). This is specifically for chrome web store, but depending on what the implementation is for other stores the logic maybe extendable.
Are you interested in collaborating?
Yes, I am interested. You can write to me on twitter - @rusandreev
I built a similar site that indexed and tracked all chrome extensions a couple years ago. It was an interesting project. Are you only tracking the top 100? I used these undocumented APIs to find all the extensions in chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/sitemap.
Curious if you are doing something similar?
I am showing top100 on the site but tracking more than 20,000 extensions.
I don't use any API. Just scrap these extensions from the main page.
It's a nice list. Indo think that's there's space for a nice analytics saas that's works for every addon store. The 2 I've seen are extpose and chrome something, and these are both pretty dead
