Use Waiting Lists

A viral waiting list is a great tactic to get some initial traction before you've launched your product, and generate some buzz around what you're building.

Before launching your product, set up a waiting list for people to access the beta version of your product. To join the list, they can simply leave their name and email address.

Now here's the trick: once they're on the list, give them the option to invite their friends to sign up too. With ever successful sign up, move them further up the list. This is a great incentive for them because they more friends they get to sign up, the higher they are on the waiting list.

If executed properly, this will give you fantastic momentum for your launch and a solid competitive advantage.

Hi Jon, I built a tool, LaunchList (getlaunchlist.com), to collect email addresses and manage referrals.

I would appreciate it if you could check it out and share your feedback. Thank you!

Hey there, just curious about your product getlaunchlist, how is it going? Take care.

This really limits your growth. The absolute best thing is to have people using your product sharing your product. Not people who have never used your product.

    Just launch already!

Mixed feeling here @kamphey. If you look at Superhuman, they used this exact tactic and have seen a ton of growth. The exclusivity of a product makes it all the more alluring. That being said, I get the point that getting a huge waitlist could be useful given none of these people have used the product.

I think there’s a fine line to toe on generating hype and getting a solid conversion on your waitlist.

Picking one exception to the rule makes the rule even stronger. Limiting people from using a product only limits people from using the product.

Especially in the early goings of building a product you want as many people that can use the product, to use the product and get to the aha moment as fast as possible.

A waiting list just makes people wait. It does not do anything else.

How do you get your waitlist to convert to users? It's easy to build a waitlist but converting customers can be tough.
