Hello - we started using the Ship from Product Hunt's Pro plan a few months ago. We wanted to try out the promotion to the PH community and see what sort of traction we got from it. While the Ship product itself leaves a lot to be desired, the exposure to the PH community has been pretty good for us. Lots of early adopters found us through the Upcoming Products section.
The nice thing is you can promote multiple projects (the limit is two, which they don't tell you in the UI). So we began using it to post other little content product ideas. For example, our checklist for launching on Product Hunt (success), our State of the Stack survey idea (fail), and various other ideas.
It's actually turned out to be really helpful for us. It lets us validate content ideas while building an audience for them. You can gauge interest by how many people subscribe and share before actually committing to work on something.
A few drawbacks we've seen:
I wrote up more info here if you're interested in trying it out.
Anyone else using Ship? Thoughts?
Hy Matt,
we just started using Ship.
I am looking into the benefits of a PRO account, so I came across your post.
Your post convinced me, we need to get it. They actually tell you about the project limitation, but until now I haven't thought about testing the many smaller ideas we have, as we have only one main project. Good advice! Thanks!
Cool - let me know how it works out for you!
Honestly, I think all the value would just come from you being active on PH. For me ship was a big failure.
Yeah, being active in the community is helpful. But we definitely got a lot of signups from promoted pages and early adopters/active users. It will be interesting to do an analysis of CAC for PH compared to say Twitter/Google ads one day.
I had a similar question : https://www.indiehackers.com/post/what-do-you-think-of-product-hunt-ship-5e3d73dd86
The comments seem to align - not useful. The spam seems to be true too - a lot of fake emails coming through.
It's weird though - there will be a day or two of nothing but spam, but then for the most part it's actual PH users.
I've had the same experience. Seems to come in bursts.
I tried using it a while ago, but yeah, it's beyond bad and useless. Their pricing is outrageous - I saw nothing useful and gave up.
