Voice Messages: Controversial, but why?

Something that we've noticed - voice messages are used consistently internationally but lack popularity in the states.

Why is that?

Now - before I ask a few questions, there should be a disclaimer: we’re trying to solve that issue with TapeDeck. If you want to hear more about it, feel free to ask away, but I won’t make this post about our venture.

Here’s the questions I’d love some feedback on:

1. Have you ever sent an audio message? Without naming names, who did you send it to? A family member? A close friend?

2. Do you think voice messages are a cultural thing?

3. Does the ‘text-first’ formatting of iMessage & whatsapp inhibit voice messages?
   Think about snapchat being a picture-first platform for this example

4. Can audio-only work, or do you need other format types?
   Ex. ability to send pictures, text, etc. etc.

5. Do you enjoy audio messages? Do you ever send them?

6. (if you dislike them) would your opinion change if all of your friends were sending them?

Any thoughts or comments on voice messages would be appreciated! WhatsApp reported a few years ago that over 7 billion voice messages are sent every day, and it’s just surprising that it still seems a little taboo here in the states.
