What a terrible client idea doesn't look like

There was a lot of discussion on X's #buildinpublic community after Nick from Baked Design published a message from their client - paraphrased, a client just said to them "Please, charge me more!"

Have you ever seen such an oddly amazing request from a client?

Some called it a "marketing trick", some called it just "cringe", bet let's break it down, and why, indeed, this was a merely genius step from the client.

At first glance, you would wonder: "Why?" - but if you think about it, it's pretty genius, and beneficial for both sides!

So, if you are wondering "Why would someone willingly pay ~$500/month more than they are paying now, for essentially the same service" - you need to know, even though on paper they are paying for "the same service", in spirit, it will never be the same. And here is why...

The client:

  • gets exceptional work done by Alex, Nick, and the team
  • hiring a dedicated designer on such a level would cost him substantially more - so on a grand scale, it's a better deal overall even with the increase
  • he definitely positions himself as an "extremely lovable" client by taking initiative and showing appreciation - which (at least from personal experience) means that the Baked Design team will enjoy working with him more, eventually leading to better output

Baked Design:

  • an increased MRR by $500 (ARR by $6000)
  • a great deal of appreciation for what and how they do it
  • additional motivation to continue kick-ass with their work
  • unobvious one: they got additional exposure because of the controversy this post made on X - which will definitely unintentionally benefit them

I am sure it wasn't a difficult decision for the client to increase the monthly subscription for himself - but it took a great level of gratitude, appreciation, and thoughtfulness to actually think about doing that, which is something that most clients don't do.
