I have a newsletter to promote. I am absolutely certain of the quality and value of the content, and I sent 2 issues already.
This is what I did to get subscribers (target audience is mobile developers, app product managers, and designers):
- Posting to Reddit
- Posting to Twitter Communities
- Posting to Telegram Communities (both paid and free)
- Posting to Indie Hackers
- Product Hunt launch
- Asking subscribers with a decent number of Twitter followers / Linked In contacts to share the newsletter on their feeds
- Facebook cpc (cost of a subscriber is too high)
- Having an industry expert / influencer to participate in the newsletter and tweet about it
- Contacting industry newsletter editors about an opportunity of being featured there
- Posting to Slack communities
- Posting to Discord communities
- Posting to Facebook communities
Some channels works better, some worse. Still I don't see a good flow of subscribers. What am I missing here? What other channels should I use?
Also, how many issues should I send to see if there is traction?
I grew my newsletter to 15000 subscribers and I write around Micro SaaS Ideas
Recently wrote about growing a newsletter on IH. Here is my take.
Build a side project that drives leads to the main newsletter - The side project doesn't have to be tech heavy. It should be able to be built using simple NoCode stack and shouldn't take more than 2-3 days. In most cases, this side project/product should be free to get more leads. [I am working on something around this. Should be ready sometime this week]
Create an ebook that is closely related to your audience. Could be paid or free. Keeping it for free drives more subscribers to your newsletter. Keeping it paid helps you experiment better (something around Newsletter). I created Zero To Founder ebook
Get an Influencer in your niche and help him with a small free product that he could use and in return he could mention about your newsletter.
Pick an Influencer, offer to write content (really high quality content) for him for free and ask the Influencer to mention about your newsletter somewhere in his post/tweet.
Wow! Thank you for your advice!
I wonder, how making a ebook didn't occurred to me. But other ideas are fresh for me, I'd never come up with them myself. Thanks!
I wrote one at Zero To Founder
But yeah, try a few of these and post us all some updates. Or reply here.
Thanks! Looks very interesting
I run a niche, curated programming newsletter with around 3k subs.
I've had decent growth from creating posts on LinkedIn + Twitter, then tagging the authors of the articles I feature in my newsletter. I also email them personally with an image asset they can use to post on their social media (to celebrate being featured in my newsletter). This is pretty time intensive though and could definitely be automated.
I think the other comments about making a lead magnet, be it content behind an email wall or a side project, are very good ideas.
What I've also found to work fairly well is consistent cross promotions with other newsletters in my niche. I consistently get 1% or more of the other newsletter's sub count to sub to my newsletter as a result of a cross promotion. These have been so successful for me, I decided to build a site and facilitate connecting other creators with each other (https://crosspromote.io/). I connect creators in similar niches with similarly sized newsletters via an intro email every week, for FREE. So far the feedback I've gotten has been outstanding, with several people saying although it's pretty barebones, it's the best service they've tried.
I think building relationships with other creators is one of the most important things you can do to grow your newsletter and as a creator.
Thanks! I posted my newsletter on crosspromote! Such a nice idea!
I also thought about tagging recently and decided to use it for the next issue.
Awesome :)
What is too high? How much do you value a subscriber exactly?
Note: the more you send emails, the more you can include ad slots, and the more your subscriber LTV increase. If you only send monthly emails, it's harder to get a good ROI on newsletter paid acquisition channels because your MRR with things such as newsletter sponsoring can be very low. If you send daily your MRR per subscriber can be like 20x (but you have to put the hours to create the content, so it doesn't make sense if you have a small newsletter)
The newsletter's goal is not monetization, but more of a lead magnet. In such case it takes time to see how the subscribers pay off, because their journey from subscription to a purchase is quite long. Still it seems that $114 for a subscriber will never yield.
Have you run paid acquisition for enough time? Do you have properly set up conversion tracking? I'm not particularly good at paid ads, but convert for less then 2$/sub on some platforms. I see many other newsletters relying on ads in a successful way.
Even for a sponsored newsletter, it's hard to figure out the LTV. You never know when a reader will churn and newsletter analytics tools are not good enough to help you much here to predict unsubscribes.
You're right. Not so much time has past, so I'll be waiting a bit longer to see the cost of subscribers
Time. You’re missing time. More time = more posts = more surface area. It will compound.
And other good suggestions in this thread.
Thank you! This sounds hopeful
I think you need to get into email marketing.
What I've experienced working very well is a lead magnet. Make an ebook relevant to your Podcast and then give it away in exchange for their email address.
Then humanly push your content through a newsletter where your Podcast is the main focus.
I'm using this for my YouTube channel, and it's working very well.
Yeah! Lead magnet must work! Thanks!
Great suggestions here and I'll add submitting to newsletter directories like mine https://inboxreads.co/ can help with a steady flow of subscribers. But have to agree with every one that the main thing is time, you seem to be doing all the right things it just takes a long time to see the result of your work when it comes to content cretion.
Thanks a lot! I've submitted my Newsletter to your directory and I enjoyed the experience.
it takes time how long have you been doing it? i see you said 2 issues sent so i guess its recent? give it more time continue posting on sm channels, provide older issues for free until you get your target number.
Thanks!
Yeah, I'm planning building a web-page with all previous issues as I go ahead.
I've started this summer, the newsletter is monthly. I wonder, how much time needed to see if it's hopeless or worth working.
Having your issues online in public is not an option, particularly if you don't already have an audience that trust you. I suggest publishing blog posts, and not newsletter issues.
Also, I suggest you post regularly on social networks insight on paywalls, and interact regularly with your target audience, instead of sending everything only once a month
What I understand is that you send a newsletter that we can't see issues online, and it's only the 2nd edition. IMO it will be very hard to grow, even with time.
You have to provide value to all the places you promote your newsletter first, before asking them to subscribe. I suggest writing public blog posts, and actually send the blog posts in the newsletter (even if the content is the same, I feel the term "blog post" is easier to sell than "newsletter issue").
Maybe focus on one platform at a time instead of spamming all the communities. Also don't forget to make friends in the process. If you spread the world with automated tools and never reply to anyone, like a robot, that won't help to convert. People subscribe to real humans newsletters
In 2020 I started a React newsletter in French, and got 500 subscribers in the first day. Why? Because I posted daily on LinkedIn for a year before and built an audience there. If only I started with the newsletter, the growth would have been much slower and I would probably get demotivated.
Thanks! It sounds very good

FYI my main acquisition channel today is Twitter that I use daily as a real human and chat with a lot of people (publicly or DM).
I get like 100-200 new subscribers per week thanks to my weekly thread that is a Twitter version of my weekly newsletter: https://twitter.com/sebastienlorber/status/1549459627791761414
Tip: linking to the thread inside the newsletter helps to get more retweets.
I thought about developing my Twitter account, but it takes so much effort! i just don't see how I'm able to generate enough content to gain some audience
