What's stopping you?

I found myself into YCombinator's list of predefined reasons on what's keeping you from launching on own startup in Starter School. I found it to be inspirational for me because none of them really apply to me. Except for health benefits. I had a couple of health scares including getting false positived for retinal eye detachment last year, where I frantically ran around the city going to 3 eye doctors in a single day and burned $600 dollars that day when I was uninsured. That's a story for another day.

If I could add one thing to that list, it would be myself. I am my greatest enemy.

But let's say some of it applied to you- couldn't you work around that? If you're scared to quit your job, you can work during your off hours, or switch to a job that doesn't have insane hourly commitments. If you don't know how to code, you can learn. Coding, or any skill for that matter can be picked up relatively quickly because as long as you understand the fundamental building blocks like loops, conditionals, test a little, code a little, and DRY.

Other than that, what's stopping you?

Second it. OMG, I always say it to myself - there are no outer enemies, I'm the only one :( and I don't know what to do with it.

Another enemy is fear to fail again. I failed so many times but I'm still not used to it and it stopped me sometimes.

BTW the knowledge how to code makes everything much harder. I'm a software developer with 10++ years of experience what gives me feeling I can make anything (and it's truth :( I can). That's why I switch so easy between ideas. But I also have the illusion that I'm eternal what is totally wrong. The combination of these two is dangerous.

I know this sounds like total BS, but in some ways I'm afraid of what happens if this actually works out and my product is successful. The power dynamic in my relationship would change and I don't think the relationship would survive. And another thing is that I hate spending money when I'm not sure if I'll get a positive ROI back. So yeah, I probably self-sabotage a little too much.

For me, I think it's fear of failure. It's a combination of paralyzing and unproductive. So hard to be rational sometimes.

I hear you. I am a serial procrastinator and part of it has to do with the fear of failure because I can always blame it on the lack of time i've given myself.

I would recommend you try to push a very tiny delta at a time. I've been trying to start it up again and enjoy the little jolts I get something working correctly. good luck!

Golden handcuffs. My salary is really high, and lifestyle creep (mainly induced by getting kids and wanting the best for them) keeps me from going off on my own.

It also doesn’t help that my job contract more or less prevents me from side-hustling
