What's your customer interview process?

I've read the Mom Test, and have realized that I've built too much of my product and tried too many different marketing strategies before fully understanding the market and my potential users.

Where do you guys typically look to find people to conduct user interviews for? I'm currently looking for people on HackerNews who've complained or talked about something similar to what I'm building (a Medium alternative with a focus on content ownership).

Also, once you find these people, how do you reach out for a call? Don't want to seem spammy or sound like I'm just conducting a survey. Especially since with the Mom Test, I want to mention as little about what I'm building as possible.

    Hi Roland,
I am happy to help you here - as I've done hundreds of interviews like that

Build a profile of your respondents before searching for them. It will help you define the "places" where you can find them. Well indeed, these should be like communities - Slack, Facebook, IndieHackers? I used to search by keywords to find relevant people

Now, the invitation part. I am usually pretty straight here. So I say something like "we have a product and a problem about it. I feel you have the experience and you can help me".

You can try onboarding beta users by giving them lifetime access. In return you can look for interviews and feedback. I see product hunters are genuinely interested to share valuable feedback and care for the product as well to grow. Twitter, Reddit, FB groups can help to find this audience.
