When to leave main job and dedicate full time to side project?

Hi,
I need the Indie Hackers advice.
Im working full time in the family business where I get a nice salary and I have a good relationship with my family.
Although, I started months ago a side project with a partner and in the last months is doing really well. Actually I'm making x10 the money Im doing working full time and what Im doing in my side project is my passion. It not as stable as the family business but has lot of future.
In near future I know that I would need to work full time on that side project if I want it to be continued but Its still really hard to leave the family and all the problems my leaving can make (e.g. Im the only one that know how to use a CNC machine).
When someone consider is the right time?
Thanks!

Hey -Nacho, I would spend sometime addressing the problems your leaving will cause.

Like investigating what it would take to find a replacement. You could for example take someone on as an apprentice and train them up etc.
I think if you are prepared with solutions to all the problems and questions you will have from your family before you make the move, they will see how much you care and you will be inconveniencing them less. Of course a lot will depend on the family dynamic and if they reject your solutions, you have at least done your part and can leave in good faith.
Start by listing all the very practical issues and don't let emotions cloud your process.

It sounds like you are doing the right thing by following your heart, the sooner you get into your own project full time the more chance of success. Good luck.

This sounds like quite a personal question, as you mentioned a number of 'problems' that leaving could cause.

What would have to happen for you to feel comfortable leaving?

is there a situation to feel comfortable leaving? Thats what Im trying to find through other people experiences.

There are many problems leaving the family business. It will still be working more than well without me.

The other question is... How you know is the right time to take a side project as the main one and put all your efforts in it. The right time is not too early, not so late.

I guess the time you may feel comfortable leaving is when you know that things will carry on (and grow further) without you being there. Based on what you said, that might be finding someone who can operate a CNC amongst other things.

It sounds like financially your side project is bringing in a much greater income for you. Do you expect that to last and continue? Is there the option of returning to the family business if needed?
