Where to find the right cofounders and teammates?

My journey as a founder began when a friend of mine asked me to join a SaaS project he was working on. It was idea-stage back then and I didn’t really know what I was getting into, but we had a general understanding of what had to be done, given our previous experiences and affiliation history. More importantly, though, both of us knew where our skill gaps were and what kind of professionals we needed to bring on board in order to pull it off.

Long story short, the search for cofounders began. After reaching out to our direct networks, we managed to convince a few of our old colleagues and former classmates to join us. We were all experienced managers, marketers and content creators, but every one of us had limited experience in tech. We needed a skilled developer who would claim the CTO role, lead the product development, and add legitimacy to our startup. As this point, all of our connections had well-paid jobs and were reluctant to give them up, understandably.

In the midst of the pandemic, we began to realize that remote work has become a more viable option for many companies out there. This led us to start reaching beyond our direct networks, and search for a technical cofounder online. We have signed up to some major platforms and some smaller ones (one resembled Tinder, where you swipe potential matches – or bots – left and right), and joined some message boards here and there. Most proved to be filled with inactive accounts and anonymous founders. Finding a legitimate and committed cofounder was a struggle. Eventually, we found some luck in Facebook groups, but I feel like it’s more of an exception than a rule.

The process was time-consuming and tiresome, especially considering the fact that when connecting with someone through Facebook – you never really know who is the person you are linking up with. LinkedIn provides more of a background check, but it’s MASSIVE, and not really suited for smaller startups.

Finding cofounders online and growing your companies should be easier. This is why our initial business idea turned into a pivot, and we decided to build a platform that simplifies these processes.
