TLDR
When I think back all that have happened, I feel a bit of relieved. I actually have put in the effort of talking to user, marketing and building. All this activity no longer feel like a great unknown to me. Right now, I only have to increase the volume and hone in my skill, over and over again. Oh and you’re reading this, I’m also trying to create content so that’s good too :D
Hello everyone, my name is Syahru, full-time indie-hacker, part time medical student.
I started my Saas journey around 6 month ago with a tools called Jemah, a text-to-flashcards conversion tools. I created this and tried to market this to my target audience (medical students) on Reddit. But unfortunately I literally have zero marketing knowledge and how a business work generally.
Absolutely blind
With Jemah, I try to direct message people on Reddit. I initially try to get them onto a call and do some “market research” (I have no idea what is this at the time) but to no avail. But some people did respond and said they okay if I just ask the question on the chat. So I did that. I did ask them some question and 2 people did actually try Jemah’s MVP and give valuable feedback. Funnily enough I got shadowbanned because I reach out to too many people. Τhe shadowbanned occur just before I try to offer discount on Jemah toward my 2 beloved users. So I still don’t know if they get the message.
After that, I try to market it on Twitter but nothing happend. Thus I decided to kill it :(
Second round
I try to build Udang. Initially it’s for mass dm in Reddit. I post it in few places such as Kernal, BetaList etc. It did gain some traction but it was short-lived.
Third Round
I haven’t giving up on the idea of Udang yet. I also realized there is already a few big name in the game so I try to niche it down. I settle with “audience-building tool”. This time, instead of building, I will try to market it first. I set up a landing page with Yep.so and send to a few people (like 600 or something). This did also gained some traction with 24 sign-ups. But I realized joining a waitlist is not validation, but getting paid is. So for my last attempt. I try to put a Gumroad links with all-time visits of 4 and 0 purchase :)
