Will writing make me a better bootstrapper?

Christ knows.

I can state that being in a constant state of worry about my ever-dwindling financial runway doesn’t make me a better bootstrapper, yet I seem to do an awful lot of that…

Inspired by this Tweet:

I’ve decided to make writing my daily practice. Not ‘journaling’ as such but close enough.

Writing is now the second thing I do when I awake, negating the potential to talk myself out of it. Yes, I realise that last sentence sounds like a crazy person wrote it but there’s not a whole lot that I get up to these days that 'one who is of sound employment' wouldn’t consider pretty nuts…

Why dedicate this time to writing when there are myriad ways, we bootstrappers, can busy ourselves at any given moment? Most more likely to wield a dollar from our effort than peddling words?

Well, here’s my shotgun rationale:

  1. Writing forces me to distil my hornets’ nest of a ‘boot-strapper brain’. On any given day I'm gaining understanding across a huge breadth of new concepts and ideas, but my depth of understanding is sometimes Kardashian-shallow. Through writing I challenge and distil my understanding of a given concept so articulate can good
  2. Writing is chipping away at defining and promoting my view of the world. Survey says: 'differentiating yourself is a good thing as it allows likeminded entities to find and engage with me'. Great in the ‘I hope to f*ck my start-up turns a dollar someday’ sense but also in a community growth sense, especially for fellow solopreneurs out there.
  3. Writing means I ‘win’ every day. Bootstrapper motivation is a fickle beast. Some days I’m flying high, others I’m clutching (usually when I make the mistake of checking my ledger). By scrawling every morning I’m committing to making motivation a habit. It turns out this is backed by research; ‘achievement’, along with ‘power, affiliation, security and adventure’ being one of the five major motivations that drive people’s actions at work.

'Security’ isn’t going to be my primary motivation source any time soon so I’m going to stick with ‘achievement’ and write like I’m running out of time

Will driving cars in a daily basis make me a nascar racer?
Will showing up in gym everyday make me an olympic athlete?

Writing everyday surely has benefits as others mentioned. Especially when it comes to communicating ideas, which I believe is crucial on this one man show.

Aha! A fellow sports lover I see, although I never could get into Nascar - too many circles.

      My take?

The common element to a succesful bootstrapper, Nascar driver or olympic athlete is an effective system. A synergistic routine, method and platform that will reduce the risk of failure and increase the potential for success.

Writing is now part of my bootstrapper system.

    Writing has many advantages, indeed:

    • Clarifying and developing our own thoughts
    • Sharing ideas
    • Sharing knowledge
    • Describe our processes and being able to explain those to others
    • Creating content to support our products
    • Creating info products
    • ...

Interested to know how are you leveraging that Comms Major in a start-up context @fromtheexchange

Terrorizing the indiehackers comment sections, of course! Haha

Being self-taught and having a growth mindset have enabled me to wear a lot of hats in a start-up context. I know many tech founders who look for a marketing partner or vice versa, whereas I’m able to handle most of that myself as a solo founder. You can never have enough practice expressing ideas, communicating thoughts, and working in cross-disciplinary groups.

Interesting... A system nerd/founder of a productivity system based start-up myself, I'd love to know more about the method that underpins your daily awesome if you care to share? Sounds like whatever it is; it's working for you!
