Hey IndieHackers, I built this chrome extension for my own needs. I have decided to share it. As a long time Gmail user, I haven't seen something like this even on Gmail themes. I needed a dark minimalist theme that wasn't going to keep hurting my eyes. The extension is complete and has 5 themes to start. I was thinking of offering a LTD where;
Would you consider buying it? Please share your thoughts.
EDIT 1: The results are in! From the overwhelming feedback so far, fellow Ihers agree that the theme is beautiful, but wouldn't purchase. Since there are four more themes, I will now release it for free for everyone on the chrome webstore. I will add more themes & features.
Will post the link tomorrow after Google reviews & accepts my submission. You guys are amazing!
EDIT 2: The extension was accepted by Google. Check it out here https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/cjknpkdhhiichpfeakfbjgngmlfjihka
Make sure to go to your Gmail settings first and select a theme that has an image background then apply the extension themes.
Use it as a free lead magnet for other projects that people would acc pay for.
Thank you for the feedback.
great deed
Hii
Great
Really nice, love this UI!
@jeffroy thank you
I think that themes for things in the google suite is quite a saturated market right now. Personally, there would have to be a major point of difference between other themes (probably a feature outside of visual) for me to pay for a theme
@lachlan thanks for the feedback. I have released it for free and will be adding new features that make it more than a themer.
Since gmail offers a lot of themes (even knowing they're bad in the majority of the cases) I would not buy this.
The theme looks really cool but unless there's also a tool that offers something different that just "look and feel" I think it's hard to sell!
But anyway, it's just my opinion and congrats, the theme looks really cool.
@fmfhacker thanks!
Wow, the theme is awesome, cool!
@MrPan thank you!
I see Gmail has already a bunch of themes, however I find them a little bit annoying. I'd start publishing your themes for free then later offering higher quality ones for payment.
@prubio7 that's true, it's like they are not bothered at all to produce nicer themes with the massive teams they have. I like that idea!
I think it works not only gmail, but also all page in chrome.
If you can design the theme that is beautiful for all page in chrome, more people will use it and pay for it.
But I think it's hard to desigin a general theme that is suitable for all pages.
@wanderer123 you are right on this 'But I think it's hard to desigin a general theme that is suitable for all pages.' That's why i designed it specifically to work on Gmail.
I'm hesitant to invest in it, mainly due to the possibility that Google could offer something similar themselves eventually.
@MAIStrategy thanks for the feedback and you are probably right. I will offer it for free.
Hi David,
I like the look of your product.
Perhaps if you added additional functionality with a tool in the theme, it could be monetized…
Best,
Sillydev
@Adultetguy Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely add more features soon
No, I wouldn't buy it.
Sorry.
@simplisticallysimple thanks for your feedback
Doesn't Gmail have a dark theme?
@Bacosil It has a dark theme. They don't have options for people who want more/different. Most of their other themes are either brightly colored or ones that have background images.
Looks cool. Don't relent on it yet, think of additional useful features that could probably make it worth buying .
Don't relent Yet!
@kennyman20 thanks for the encouragement ;). I think I could still add some really useful features that would compel people to pay even after offering it for free.
Yes! Never stop brainstorming! Also, free users feedback/reviews will definitely help you towards pointing you to the right directions as well.
Absolutely.
Personally, probably not. But perhaps a certain market segment would for a one-time payment of a few bucks
@thirdbrain thanks for the feedback, I have actually decided to offer it for free. Will share the link after Google approves it, probably tomorrow.
I personally wouldn’t buy it. But it looks nice!
@micadep thanks for the feedback!
Nice work but I don't outright see anything compelling enough for me to buy it when there are so many other free themes out there. What new features or updates do you have in mind that would help your product stand-out from other themes (aside from the dark minimalist aspect)?
@LizWestQP thanks for the feedback. Off of my head I was thinking more features like removing ads from 'promotions' & 'social' tabs (highly doubt google would let the extension be around if i do this), offering advanced search capability, adding even more beautiful themes e.t.c
Ok now that I might pay for! Congrats on releasing the themes though! I think once you really niche down on your target audience then the prize features that they might pay for will become clear. Is there a way for you to get feedback from users of the themes you've launched?
Why dont you target gamers and offer this for free to have conversations. Those conversations will lead to the next big thing
@bhavi_23 that's also a good idea. Thanks!
looks pretty, but I wouldn't sorry! keep going!
@danielrongo thanks!
nope, sorry, but great work!
@vengeance thanks!
Sounds like a great fit!
@premsaini Thank you.
Maybe for a couple of bucks some people will buy it as a one off
There are generic browser extension that let you override themes in general
This might be close in concept to yours (I get the colour differ)
https://userstyles.org/styles/170121/gmail-dracula
I'd expect there would be some marketplace for theme overrides but didn't look

Thanks @hatkyinc for the insight.
