Hi everyone! I've been thinking a lot recently about analysis paralysis -- about the cost of making plans, constant goal-setting, and the need I feel to devise some grand design when beginning new ventures.
In thinking about that I realized that my own journey to my current career was the antithesis to this mindset. My path to computer science was wandering, and guided largely by intuition and half-baked interests.
I wrote a piece (you can find it here https://posttruth.substack.com/p/how-i-got-into-computer-science) about this path, and how it's shaped my views on grand design. I hope this piece is helpful to people at a crossroads and people starting new endeavours, as many of us are.
It's amazing that you started just like me. I also started with my Texas Instruments calculator in school and wrote some super stupid helper programms and small games. My best game I developed on the calculater was a small Jetpack Joyride port for the calculater, but instead of getting faster it was getting slower and crashed after some time because of running out of space 😅
Ah so cool to hear that other people came into CS the same way! Yes, I distinctly remember running up against the memory limits and watching my game slow to <= 1FPS.
