One Toolkit for Sync, Backup & Deduplication

I’ve been building ByteSync, an open-source file synchronization and backup tool that makes it easy to keep files in sync between computers — without VPNs, server setup, or cloud dependencies.
Last month, ByteSync received a 5-star review on Softpedia 🎉
It’s a small but motivating milestone for me. The project is still young, but it’s steadily improving — new features are in development, the UI is evolving, and I’m gathering feedback to make it even more user-friendly and reliable.
I started ByteSync because I needed a way to synchronize files securely and efficiently across different environments (workstations, servers, remote sites). Now it’s becoming something that other people can use and contribute to, which feels great.

Time has flown since my last post here!
Almost two years ago, I made the decision to open-source ByteSync. Since then, between my professional commitments and this exciting project, my days have been packed. I have dedicated a good portion of my free time to a major rewrite of the software. I am pleased to announce that ByteSync is now available for free download, with its source code under the MIT license.
But the journey doesn’t stop here! I’m currently working on an enhanced version that will bring back some features that were temporarily removed during the rewrite. Exciting improvements are on the way to make file transfers even simpler and more efficient. ByteSync is evolving, and each update takes it one step further toward becoming an even more powerful solution.

I have done a substantial optimization work on the transfer of small files by ByteSync.
This is a common problem for all synchronization and remote backup software: small files are proportionally slower to transfer. And when the mass of these files is important, the overall average transfer speed is negatively impacted.
Since ByteSync is designed by default for remote use, I just had to develop new systems to optimize the transfer of small files. ByteSync is now more than 10 times faster than the FTPS and SFTP protocols, which are widely used for this purpose.
This gives me the opportunity to communicate again about ByteSync's performance. Maybe this will make new testers want to join the adventure!

ByteSync is a data synchronization software.Its main feature is that it can easily synchronize remote data by transferring only the parts that differ between files. To summarize technically: ByteSync brings rsync over the Internet, through the Cloud.
Up to 5 Windows, Linux or macOS clients can connect via a secure session system and enjoy convenient synchronization options.-

How is that different from Dropbox?

Both have different operating modes and respond to different use cases.
DropBox, Google Drive or OneDrive offer continuous data synchronization between one or more machines, with permanent storage in the Cloud. The synchronization is entirely managed by the system, which could be likened to a shared hard drive in the cloud.
With ByteSync, as with many other synchronization and backup solutions, such as rsync, FreeFileSync or SyncThing, the user decides how, when and where the data is synchronized, without permanent storage on Cloud servers. This kind of solutions meets more specific needs, which can be crucial in the professional world.

ByteSync 2022.2 includes many new features and enhancements that were necessary to test the application properly.
Although the solution is not yet production-ready, it is now possible to use it for both local and remote synchronization, taking advantage of its unique features on the market.

ByteSync version 2022.1.12 was released a few days ago.
This version includes improvements and fixes, as well as a new operating mode dedicated to Local Synchronization. In this mode, the session includes only one user who choose to synchronize data from his/her workstation, external hard drives or any other accessible device on his/her local network (computer, server, NAS).
The Local Synchronization mode completes the existing Cloud Synchronization mode. With these two operating modes, the software now offers sessions from 1 to 5 clients, local or remote.
The Local Synchronization mode also allows testers to manipulate the application more quickly, without having to deploy it on several computers before using it. It will thus facilitate their first steps in the solution.

This is our first MVP that can be used for remote on-demand synchronization and backup.
Cloud Sessions can have up to 5 members and data transfer is optimized with bulk buffering when there are 3 or more members.
I am now working on the Local Synchronization mode and communicating about the solution to attract beta users.

For simplicity and to better distinguish the solution from my company name, I renamed it from POW ByteSync to ByteSync.
I also created a dedicated website for the solution. In my opinion, this gives it a more professional image.

This is an important step that will allow me to test the solution with its first public users.
It took me more time than I initially thought. But it was essential to finalize the software, its documentation (where I still have work to do) and the support area for users.
