Script Timer
Free YouTube script timer and video length calculator
11 weeks ago I had no traffic, no backlinks, no users, and no budget.
Today ScriptTimer has 12,000+ Google impressions, backlinks from Capterra, JournalistsToolbox.ai, Empowerly, and Product Hunt, and is being used by creators in 6+ languages.
Here's every number, every tactic, and every failure — honestly.
---
**The Problem I Was Solving**
I kept making the same mistake building YouTube content: writing what felt like a 5-minute script, recording it, and discovering it ran 8 or 9 minutes. Re-recording wasted hours every week.
I searched for a tool that would tell me my exact speaking time before recording. Nothing existed that was built specifically for video creators — with multiple speed options, YouTube Shorts eligibility checking, and podcast timing in one place.
So I built it. ScriptTimer.io.
---
**What I Built**
8 free tools. No signup. No payment. No premium tier:
- Script Timer — paste script, get exact speaking time at slow/normal/fast pace
- YouTube Shorts Timer — 60-second eligibility checker
- Podcast Timer — episode length from word count
- Speech Timer — live countdown for presentations
- Words to Minutes — convert word count to time
- Reading Time Calculator — article read time
- WPM Test — measure your speaking speed
- Presentation Timer — slide calculator + countdown
Total cost to build: $0 (domain + hosting was pre-existing)

**The Real Numbers — Week by Week**
Week 1: 0 impressions. 0 clicks. 0 users.
Week 3: 200 impressions. 1 click.
Week 6: 1,540 impressions. 1 click.
Week 8: 4,420 impressions. 4 clicks.
Week 10: 9,550 impressions. 10 clicks.
Week 11: 12,000 impressions. 12 clicks.
Bing separately: 1,600 impressions, 24 clicks, 1.52% CTR.
Combined: 13,600+ total impressions, 36 organic clicks.

**Backlinks I Earned — All Free**
| Site | DR | How |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | 95 | Published 5 articles via CodeToDeploy |
| Capterra | 90 | Self-submitted listing |
| Software Advice | 78 | Automatic via Capterra (Gartner) |
| GetApp | 87 | Automatic via Capterra (Gartner) |
| Product Hunt | 80 | Self-submitted |
| dev.to | 78 | Published articles |
| JournalistsToolbox.ai | — | They found me themselves |
| Empowerly | 62 | Link exchange via outreach |
| Connectively | 70 | Expert roundup contributor |
The JournalistsToolbox one shocked me. I never submitted. A journalist educator found ScriptTimer and listed it in 3 categories — alongside Canva, AssemblyAI, and Poynter. Zero outreach on my part.

**What Actually Worked**
**1. Page optimization over new content**
My words-to-minutes page had 3,507 impressions at position 71 — Google was showing it but not ranking it. I expanded the FAQ from 7 to 14 questions targeting the full keyword cluster. Within 24 hours Google sent me a notification: 661% impression increase on that page.
I optimized all 8 tool pages the same way. Within 48 hours all of them were getting clicks for the first time.
**2. Expert roundup content**
I asked 17 industry experts one question: "What's an unexpected way you use a script timer?" Published the answers as a blog post. The experts shared it with their audiences. The post now ranks at position 13 — almost page 1.
**3. One good link exchange**
A single email to Empowerly.com resulted in a DR 62 dofollow backlink and a warm ongoing relationship. One email. One backlink. Still sending traffic.
**4. Medium via CodeToDeploy**
5 articles approved by CodeToDeploy publication. 50-85 claps each. DR 95 backlinks from every article. The comparison posts (ScriptTimer vs WordCounter, ScriptTimer vs WordsToTime) are performing best.

**What Didn't Work**
**Guest posting outreach** — Almost every "write for us" site that seemed free turned out to be paid when I emailed. Wasted weeks on this. Stopped doing it.
**Teleprompter affiliate** — 58 visits, 0 conversions. The banner placement was wrong — showing before users got value from the tool. Still fixing this.
**AlternativeTo** — Rejected my submission. Moved on.
**Social media** — LinkedIn account locked due to verification issues (expired passport, no driving license — very Pakistani founder problem). Twitter/X got zero traction without a following.
---
**The Honest Reality**
I'm a solo founder from Karachi, Pakistan. No co-founder. No funding. No team. No salary while building this.
I used AI as my strategic co-founder — sharing daily metrics, asking for prioritization help, getting instant feedback on every decision. This was featured in Connectively's "25 Surprising Startup AI Use Cases" article. It works better than I expected.
The hardest part wasn't the technical work. It was the weeks of zero traction when I couldn't tell if any of it was working. The impressions chart was flat for weeks. Then it wasn't.

**Current Status**
Revenue: $0 (AdSense approved, implementing this week)
Monetization plan: AdSense on blog posts + Teleprompter affiliate (fixing placement)
Target: $100/month by December 2026
