    Great Work!

  2. 1

Hey I have some questions? How do you guys scale the backend, realtime-connections and what databases do you use? Would love to know more about it.

    1. 1

We use Google Cloud Run and Google Cloud SQL. It's been working great so far!

  3. 1

first time coming across Tally, we might incorporate this in our team . Props.

    1. 1

Thanks! Feel free to take it for a spin.

  4. 1

Congrats! This is great. Keep up the good work.

  5. 1

Congrats! I've never heard about Tally but now, I am impressed after reading this post. I wonder what tech stack can be used to make tools like Tally?

    1. 1

Tally is built with React, Next.js, Styled Components, TypeScript, Express.js, Sequelize and mainly runs on Google Cloud Run. 🏗️

  6. 1

Very impressed by what you and the team have achieved.

Out of curiosity why did you try to tackle this problem when there were other players like typeform in the space? How did you identify the USP that would differentiate Tally from the competitors?

    1. 1

We wanted to build a form builder that is actually fun to use and doesn't break the bank. So we moved away from the volume-based pricing most players (like Typeform) have and offered unlimited submissions and forms for free. Our second USP is our interface, no drag and drop like traditional form builders, but a clean text editor-like interface.

  7. 1

Tally is a great product we love to use! Great work!

  8. 1

Congrats Team, We have using Tally in product Boringlaunch from day 1 and its super simple and amazing.

      So glad to hear that!

March 1, 2024 Our bootstrapped journey to $100K MRR.

Back in the summer of 2020, we launched the first version of our form builder Tally. Today—more than 150 feature updates and over 250,000 happy users later—we're super proud to reach the milestone of $100K MRR with a bootstrapped team of 3.

Right from the beginning, our main goal has been to make form-building fun, powerful, and free. And until today, that's what sets Tally apart from the crowd of form builders out there.

As we entered 2023, we had two main goals:

  • Grow our team to scale customer support and speed up product development
  • Improve the UX of Tally, keeping it the simplest way to create forms, accumulating in the launch of Tally 2.0

Here’s what happened on our journey to $100K in monthly revenue, including what worked and what didn't.

May 30, 2023 Bootstrapping our SaaS to $60K MRR with a team of 4

We’re sharing our journey of how we launched and grew our form-building tool Tally because we hope our story inspires you and provides you with some insight on how to grow your own business.

It's been a bumpy road, and we couldn't have done it without the amazing support of our dedicated community of over 100,000 users worldwide.

I gave a keynote on how we launched, grew, and are scaling Tally with a bootstrapped team. You can rewatch it here.

This is so cool! If you'd like to, can we share how to get early users please? We're struggling to have beta users. Thank you and appreciate any other advice :).

Wow, have read it. It's really helpful. Thank you MarieMartens :).

February 22, 2023 Tally featured on Fast Company

Yesterday, we discovered that Fast Company recognized us as a superior alternative to Google Forms 🥳

While there wasn't a considerable increase in traffic, it's undoubtedly a fantastic acknowledgment for the team.

Fantabulous! Love everything I have read about your story, strategy.

    • Love that your free is actually free rather than a marketing gimmick (free with constraints). Most SMEs I work with always go the sub once they truelly experienced solid repeatable value at the free tier. Your free is a genuine "try before you buy" from a citizen perspective. Thankyou!
    • Do you have a solid tally to airtable solution ideally with datawrapper.de? - a bundle subscription perhaps. This becomes a solid feedback loop process for SMEs
    • Tags used on your IH product page didnt really make sense to me. Tally is about automation of outbound forms -- is it not?
    • Would love to see more info about, what didnt work to get you to this point. As a person who tests alot of apps, I love it when the developer uses your forms to ask me 1) why i choose to install the app/extension 2) on uninstall the exit-interview.
    1. 1

      Thank you!

Tally is a no-code form-building tool, you can create any type of form or survey for free (not automation of outbound forms).
We have an airtable integration (https://tally.so/help/airtable-integration) and document our journey on our blog.tally.so

November 9, 2022 Onboarding our first employee

We're onboarding Tally's first employee this week 🎉

We're getting close to reaching 60K users, and scaling customer support was becoming a challenge with a team of 2.

We're hoping hiring will give us more headspace to focus on marketing & engineering and growing the product.

Uncomfortably excited about this new chapter, as it should be I guess 😅

First time I tried Tally forms, I was blown away by the simplicity and the novelty of the form creation UI. I didn't believe someone can build a profitable business in forms where Google Forms are free. May be not a VC funded unicorn, but surely a profitable bootstrapped business. Way to go! Wish you all the very best for the times to come.

    1. 1

Hi Yash, thanks a lot for the kind words about Tally, really appreciate it!

  2. 3

    Amazing!! Congrats 🎉

  3. 3

This is super impressive, Marie. Congratulations!
    Next up: 50k 🚀

    1. 1

      Thank you Phillip!

  4. 2

Just curious to know how did you get your first 10-100 customers? Should one focus on only cold DMs/emails? Or should one also start with SEO/content marketing?

    1. 1

We documented our first year in this blog post. First users were mainly through cold outreach https://blog.tally.so/year-1-how-we-bootstrapped-tally-to-11k-users-and-5k-mrr/

  5. 2

Congratulations on your success. What is your tech stack and how long did you take to build it?

    1. 4

      Thank you! 🙏

Tally is made with TypeScript, React, Next.js, Styled Components, Express, and runs on GCP's Cloud Run.

It took us about 2-3 months to ship our MVP.

  6. 1

Wow, congrats! You're inspiring me to keep going!

  7. 1

Congratulations, the product looks straight fire!

  8. 1

Well done Marie. Really love the simplicity of using Tally. Super!

  9. 1

    Congrats Marie!

  10. 1

    Good Job Marie. 🚀💪⚡️

  11. 1

This is really inspiring Marie. I just spent 30 minutes reading a lot of your blog on how you guys grew Tally.

Amazing to see you bootstrap to $30K successfully. Congrats! 🥳

  12. 1

This is super impressive, Marie. Congratulations!

  13. 1

Congrats! What was the efforts you put in ? I'm especially curious how you did it?

    1. 1

Thanks! We describe the different milestones on our blog and the first year in detail in this post https://blog.tally.so/year-1-how-we-bootstrapped-tally-to-11k-users-and-5k-mrr/

  14. 1

God I love this. Thank you so much for sharing the journey, it's so useful for someone like me to read about how a great product like this is formed.

    1. 1

So glad to hear it's useful!!

  15. 1

Very impressive - and likely worth quite a high multiple of that in a strategic acquisition!

    1. 1

      Maybe one day ☺️

  16. 1

Curious, how did you push it forward when it was at really really low revenue? How did you finance that?

    1. 1

We wrote about the beginning of our startup journey together in this blog post: https://blog.tally.so/how-we-quit-our-jobs-to-work-on-our-startup-lost-half-of-our-clients-decided-to-pivot-and-ended-up-building-a-no-code-tool/

We financed the first year or so with our savings. We did everything ourselves, so we needed to cover only our living expenses.

  17. 1

Just tried to connect with via your say hi link in your post but it’s broken :( I mean email isn’t right there. You might want to fix that

    1. 1

Oh, good catch! That's fixed now.

  18. 1

Congrats Marie! Last year, I used Tally and loved it; I even recommended it to a few colleagues. I'll need to use Tally again soon, keep up the amazing work!

    1. 1

Thanks a lot for spreading the word Frederico!

  19. 1

Hey, thanks for sharing this! I'm also super glad that you have the rest of your journey documented.

Question. Without a doubt, hitting 30k in MMR is very impressive. I read about the early months and years of Tally. Do you feel that it's harder now or harder to start? Once the ball is rolling how have the challenges changed?

    Thanks!

    1. 1

Thanks! The challenges are changing as our user base is growing:

      • Scaling customer support (we will hire our first employee)
      • Scammers are also finding their way to our product as it's free and we need to find ways to block them (which takes a lot of time)
      • Keep on improving the product (will hire help for engineering as well)
      1. 1

Thanks for your reply! If you need any help on the engineering side, let me know!

  20. 1

    Thanks for useful content!

  21. 1

I guess you meant to add a link to your blog post, too?

Regards from a happy contributor to your MRR

    Torsten

    1. 1

      Haha indeed, thanks Torsten! 🙈

  22. 1

    @MarieMartens Congratulations! 🎉

what is your business churn rate?

    1. 3

Around 7%. Higher than average, also because:

      • Customers don’t live in our product
      • Form builder is often used for 1-off projects
      • We don’t have an enterprise offering with multi-year deals
      1. 1

yes, you can save more of your revenue with the Churnfre tool it is helping business to reduce their churn rate.

This tool has saved our 24% churn rate in the last 30 days. You must visit this site to reduce your business churn. They are offering 14 day free trail.

  23. 1

    Huge congrats! 🎉

  24. 1

Between the two of you, how did you balance marketing and developing?

    1. 1

I'm behind the developing and Marie the marketing. We can both focus on our areas of expertise. ☺️

  25. 1

    Congrats! Love your blog btw.

  26. 1

    Many congratulations.

  27. 1

Congrats Marie! What are your user acquisition channels?

    1. 3

It's mainly product led growth (our free forms carry a 'made with Tally badge') and we found our first users through cold outreach and building in public. I wrote more about that in this post https://blog.tally.so/how-we-bootstrapped-tally-to-10k-mrr/

      1. 1

Cool story! I have used Tally also, and followed you on Twitter. 👋

  28. 1

    It is amazing!

  29. 1

Congrats! What was the efforts you put in behind the success? I'm especially curious how you differentiated from folks like typeform.

    1. 3

      Thank you!

Our main USPs are our business model and UX:

      • We offer unlimited forms and responses for free (so no volume based pricing like you would see with Typeform)
      • We don't have a drag&drop interface, but Tally works like a text editor where you can just start typing and insert blocks with your keyboard (similar to Notion)

We wrote more about what we believe are the main ingredients for our growth in this post, hope you find it useful! https://blog.tally.so/how-we-bootstrapped-tally-to-10k-mrr/

      1. 1

Sweet! 100% agree with going with the product-led growth.
Learned a lot from the blog you shared, thank you!

  30. 1

    Congrats! That's amazing

    1. 1

      Thanks a lot Dylan!

  31. 1

    Wow! Amazing!!!

  32. 1

Congrats (again)! Love Tally and love your blog!

    1. 2

      Thank you Nico!

  33. 1

Well done and congratulations...what has been your biggest learning over the last 2 years to find new customers.

    1. 2

Our product is our biggest acquisition model (Product Led Growth), so offering Tally largely for free with a 'made by Tally badge' helps us find new users for Tally. I described the process in here if you would be interested in reading more about it https://blog.tally.so/how-we-bootstrapped-tally-to-10k-mrr/

      1. 1

Thanks and this is a great way to help virality.

  34. 1

I loved your episode on the IH podcast. Hopefully my girlfriend and I can follow a similar path 😆 Huge congratulations to you and Filip!

    1. 1

Thank you! Which project are you working on?

      1. 1

I'm currently working on MentionFunnel by myself, but trying to get her involved in some capacity (or for her to come up with a cool idea we can work on together) 😄

        1. 2

          Awesome, I'll have a look!

June 17, 2022 Tally hit $20K MRR with a bootstrapped team of 2

It took us 1 year to grow our form building tool Tally to $5K MRR. Today, 8 months later, we couldn’t be more proud to share that we have surpassed the $20K MRR milestone.

Tally was born in the summer of 2020 out of a frustration with existing form builders and outrageous pricing plans. With a team of 2 (@filipminev and myself) we bootstrapped Tally to a simple and powerful form builder, trusted by more than 36,000 creators and startups worldwide.

To celebrate this milestone we're sharing the ins&outs about:

📈 Growing Tally
💬 Scaling customer support
💰 Costs to run our business
