February 28, 2024 We launched AI podcast transcription!

AI podcast transcription is now available for Transistor users:
https://transistor.fm/features/ai-transcription/

Users can access the feature by going to their Episodes list and clicking on the grey transcript icon for any episode that doesn't yet have a transcript.

Here are some of our transcription features:

  • Audio-to-text transcription, powered by Deepgram AI.
  • Automatic speaker detection (diarization).
  • Users can view/download their transcripts as plain text, SRT, VTT, JSON, and HTML files.
  • Also, we create a web page version of the transcript for each episode, which includes shareable timestamps.
  • Simple transcript editing interface to make quick corrections.

August 1, 2022 Our indie SaaS just celebrated four years since our launch!

It's been 4 years since we launched Transistor!

https://transistor.fm/anniversary/

I sat down, and tried to write down my memories of building and launching that initial version with Jon. I also reflect on everything that's happened since that launch (it's changed our lives).

I think this story will be especially interesting to folks curious about how indie companies can start, launch, and compete against large incumbents.

It's been a real gift to be able to follow your journey, Justin - from the early, early Product People days through your experiments with the maker life (and the Justin Jackson limited edition burrito) up to your current successes with Transistor. Thanks for sharing so much over the years and the inspiration you've given out so generously.

Thanks Chris! Nice to hear from folks who know the deep cuts! 😉

  2. 2

    Congrats Justin!

  3. 2

Very cool Justin - wishing you all the success.

May 11, 2022 Over 20,000 podcasts are hosted on Transistor.fm!

Our podcast hosting platform just hit a new milestone: we now have over 20,000 podcast feeds on Transistor.

I can't believe this! 🤯

Back when we started Transistor, it would have been hard for us to imagine our little platform hosting this many shows.

So exciting to help thousands of people launch their podcasts. 🙌

    You folks are killing it.

I love how such a small team can serve a huge customer base. From my understanding there are similar companies with 20+ employees doing less than yourselves.

Are you doing anything interesting for customer support?

    1. 1

      Thanks!

Keep in mind we don't have 20,000 customers (because each customer can have multiple podcasts)

We have about 6,000 customers I believe.

For customer support, all 4 of us pitch in. Helen does most of it during the EU timezone.

    Congrats!
I'm thinking of starting a podcast - perhaps transistor would be a good platform for me as well :).

      We’d love to have you!

I wrote a guide here that might be helpful:

Great work Justin, Jon and Transistor team!

Have you and your team ever had technical difficulty in handling such large volumes?
Such as Database, server and so on!

    Anyways Congrats Justin!

    1. 3

Not much. We did get some good advice from @JackEllis24 when we initially ran into some DB problems.

Both Jon (my co-founder) and Jason (our newest engineering hire) are pretty good at infrastructure stuff.

    This is massive! Congrats!

How does the 20k shows translate to downloads? How many listeners are you serving? How many GB transferred? I'm curious to see some technical stats. 🤓

  5. 1

Congratulations, this achievement is truly unexpected.

  6. 1

    That's amazing - congratulations!

    Congrats Justin!

April 4, 2022 New feature: add pages to podcast websites

Now you can use the Transistor podcast website builder to add additional pages, links, and menu items.

https://youtu.be/QeE7_JrVszs

If you want to create an "About," "Sponsors", or another page on your website, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the "Website" option in the main menu
  2. In the top navigation, click "Pages and Links"
  3. Write in your title and page content (currently only supports HTML)
  4. If you want it to appear in your website navigation, check the appropriate box
  5. Click "Create page"

The ability to add pages and external links makes the built-in podcast websites on Transistor much more versatile. Each podcast you create on Transistor gets a podcast website template free. This is a great alternative to using Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace.

March 11, 2022 New feature! 🎉

Podcast websites built in Transistor now support multiple languages.

Currently, you can select English, Spanish, or French (and we have more languages coming soon!).

This means that the menu items, buttons, and labels on podcast websites created in Transistor will appear in the correct language. 👍

January 24, 2022 Just published our first video tutorial of 2022!

Apple's podcast submission process changed since last year, so I just recored a new video tutorial:

"How to submit to Apple Podcasts in 2022"

https://youtu.be/he9_WPFSOoc

Every podcast should be submitted to Apple Podcasts' directory. This tutorial will show you how to avoid common mistakes, and walk you through the steps for adding your RSS feed to Podcasts Connect.

Unlike other platforms (like Spotify, and Google Podcasts) Apple requires you to submit your podcast feed manually. You'll need to access Podcast Connect, and submit your podcast's RSS feed there.

September 20, 2021 Doing an AMA on Reddit today

The /r/podcasting on Reddit is notoriously skeptical of self-promotion, but after years of contributing to the community (and trying to be helpful in threads) they've invited @mijustin to do an AMA today!

It shows that there's no substitution for showing up every day. ✌️

August 3, 2021 Hired our first full-time engineer!

Big day for Jon Buda, myself, and our Transistor journey:

We've hired our first full-time engineer, Jason Pearl! 🎉

https://transistor.fm/jason/

This brings the Transistor team to a total of 4 full-time people: @mijustin, @jonbuda, @helenryles, and Jason.

We believe that a small team can produce incredible software (in our case, podcast hosting & analytics), and provide the best customer experience in our industry.

    That's awesome, congrats!

Did you wait for a particular financial milestone to make this happen, or was it more a "Okay, we need someone to help us now"?

    1. 2

No particular financial milestone but we did look over our finances to make sure we could handle it. Mostly, we just have a few bigger features that I couldn't get to quick enough. Not mention allowing some vacation time for Justin and I without having to worry that nobody is available to cover and catastrophes that might happen!

  2. 2

    Great news Justin!

What awesomeness can we expect on the Transistor roadmap?

    1. 3

Some really cool stuff in private podcasts + payments.

We're also re-considering adding dynamic audio content to our roadmap. 👍

  3. 1

    Big news. Congrats!

  4. 1

Amazing milestone! Congrats to the team! 🎉

  5. 1

    Congrats all! 🙌

  6. 1

Hooray! 🥳Congratulations Justin. Looking forward to all the brilliant new features Jason will build for Transistor!
