Visa List
Know where you can travel with your passport tension free!
A year back, I launched the second version of Visa List on Product Hunt. The world has seen a 360 turn with the pandemic this year. But I never stopped building features for It's been a crazy adventure since then.
Today I launch the third iteration of Visa List. I've worked on this with passion, some doubts 🤔 and lots of love 💖 from friends, family and indie community. I made everything on this site mostly by myself 😏 so I'm super excited.
Since COVID, I have added a tracker with cases, recovered, deaths, curve flattening, containment rate and everything else related. I have also added travel restrictions finder. The travel restrictions finder is an online global map that displays the latest travel updates for a large number of countries. The map can be used to plan your vacation by letting you see which countries are open and safe to travel to, helping you avoid any potential unrest in regions that could have an impact on your vacation. The map also includes a legend that will tell you whether certain countries are closed, restricted, or open for travel.

Finally reached this milestone after a long time. It's actually very motivating because I achieved this during a pandemic.
It all starting with a small idea and down the line, it has crossed $55000 in revenue. Although it took 70% because of the pandemic, it has recovered significantly. Hell, I again got an offer to sell recently! 😅
I realized there is a good amount of interest in finding which countries are open to travel. So it's a good sign for the travel industry in general. The prediction is things will be back to normal by end of 2021.

Recently I started to notice the trend of people getting back and traveling to different countries as the number of people viewing visa requirements and booking visas have increased by 200%.
I realized there is a good amount of interest in finding which countries are open to travel. So I built a finder for that.
Now you can find the latest info on travel restrictions, quarantine and entry requirements with our global map. Travel to countries that are safe and open to travel. These are updated regularly.

Finally, after almost 18 months, visalist has achieved a new milestone, crossed $50K in total revenue. This is also when the revenue started to pick up slowly with a 15% increase from last month.
New milestones:
👀 10M pageviews
👥 4.4M users
💸 $50k revenue
This is my 3rd microstartup to cross $50K mark!

Dang it man you make it look so easy. What does your process look like?
- how do you pick a problem to solve?
- how do you communicate with users?
- what is your marketing plan like?
- what is your tech stack?
- what do you optimize for?
-
3
Amazing! Congratulations!
-
3
Congrats! btw, scroll on graphs? really? that sucks :P
-

Nice goal to achieve, congratulations!
-

I really love what he does. Congrats.
-
2
Are you working on all 3 alone?
-
1
That's correct
-
-
2
Site looks good. When looking at travel from the UK I might have spotted an issue though - it says UK → Canada is visa free but you need to have an electronic travel authorisation to travel to Canada. Wouldn't that put it into the E-visa category?
-
2
congrats @1hakr
-

thanks mate!
-
-
2
Wow
-
2
Congratulations! That's some fantastic work!
Got a few questions:
- How are you monetising the website? Is it Google Ads, affiliate links or something else?
- How did you get those big publications to write about you?
- Where is the majority of your traffic coming from? Is it the publications, search engine rankings or are you buying ads?
-
1
#1 Partnerships, subscription and ads
#2 No but got picked up by many big publications
#3 SEO, i have never paid for any ads
-
2
Amazing, congrats!

Month on Month growth decreases for the first time in last 15 months of Visa List.
💸 $3,838 Monthly Revenue (-50%)
🛠️ $80 Monthly Cost (50%)
🚦 928K pageviews (-7%)
👥 295K MAU (-28%)
🔎 3.3M Search Impressions (-18%)

Travel Industry is the most hard hit sector. I see the trend to continue for atleast this quarter. Probably things might look good for the next quarter.
More than the revenue dip, personally I miss my travels.
On another note, I have been working on coronavirus tracker, even though it doesn't generate any actual revenue, gives me satisfaction that I'm doing my small bit.
Also all the pro features in Visa List are free to use for a month keeping #COVID19 in mind.
We have also entered into a recession. I have no idea how long this will take, but I have new project in my mind so I will keep myself occupied. I hope there will be light at the end of the tunnel and we will pull though this together.

Hey, do you have some breakdown where your revenue comes from?
I am working on a project in completely different field (mathematics education - check out https://realnotcomplex.com/), but similarly, it's a website that gives free information to the users, thus I am looking for some inspiration when it comes to monetization options.
Good luck in these tough times!
-
3
It'll be a few months, but it's a hard reality that some of us will face, including our SaaS. Keep yourself busy. You'll be alright. While many of us are anti-social, we love to travel. It'll come back once we've figure out how to destroy our unseen enemy.
-
1
I hope so.
-
-
2
Sorry for the setback! Thank you for your willingness to be vulnerable and share with the community regardless.
It'll be a tough road getting there, but we'll definitely get through this.
-
1
I hope the same mate!
-
-
1
@1hakr brilliant product! But the real issue is your eCPM on pageviews is really low because you're relying on Adsense for monetization instead of going after higher ticket ad partners. Would love to collaborate -- Andrew@Lifetailored.com
Visa List is my most successful microstartup so far. One thing that made this milestone possible is the corona virus trackers which has now been used by more than 150K people. I feel good and bad at the same time, bad because we are facing such huge pandemic and good because i’m able to help travellers during such difficult times.
The growth rate is now around 15% which bring the MAU to 405K users so far. The revenue has been also stable.
So i have decided to take a break from visa list and build something else that i have been ideating from sometime. Thanks everyone who has been there showing supporting, giving feedback and cheering for me. This Indie Makers journey of 3 years has been absolutely amazing.

Why are you taking a break? Why not keep pushing forward? No idea your situation but seems analogous to Pieter Levels who was trying various things until he hit on NomadList and then he never stopped pushing on that. Would love to know what you are thinking hoping for etc.
-
3
Pieter definitely pushed nomadlist but also did remoteok. I have built almost all the things that I wanted for the v1. I have other things planned which will take another year so before I get on with it, I wanna try my other ideas. Also I got bored working on this for almost two years. I can take the risk now as I'm financially stable more or less now.

-

Congrats ! I just saw a similar copy few days ago. But yours is far better designed. Really nice ! Good luck for your next project.
-

I know which one you are talking about, i think they just started a month back. I believe that competition is good for the market.

Great job with Visa List! My wife and I were planning a euro trip recently and searched for "monaco visa for indian passport", a page from Visa List was at the 3rd (or 4th) spot and we found the information we were looking for :) Looking forward to your next product, good luck with it!
-
1
This just made my day. Helping people is the main reason I built visa list.
-
-
2
Awesome job @1hakr! It's a dream for me to get to where you are today. Thank you for the inspiration.
I also put your tracker on my little list of trackers: https://github.com/abuuzayr/coronavirus-apps
-
2
How did you compile the list of visa requirements and how much time, effort and money went into this? Seems like a good success story that I'd love to hear a podcast about.
Last question, how do you manage the data in the back? what's your admin system?
-
1
Manual mostly but have also automated few data points. It took me almost a year get here working full time. I used MySQL and to manage data I use sequel pro.
Thanks for thinking it's a good success story @csallen are you listening? 😅

Hi, i know this sounds like a really dumb question but how does the site generate revenue?

It looks like ads

Well Done Indie Hacker!
That's it, That's the comment.-
1
Thanks mate!
-
-
2
Not sure how you can fix this (I'm not a developer) but maybe when the cursor is over the map part DISABLE page scrolling, because maps and the page fight with each other when scrolling, and your mouse happens to be over the maps
and if the page is not scrolling and instead the maps, maybe just bring up a tooltip to ask the user to move their mouse away from the map section to scroll the page
users can be dumb and smart at the same time
-
2
Good luck with the new venture! I wish you even bigger success compared to VisaList.

Great results. How low is bounce rate? Do they visit other pages besides virus map ?

It's around 30-35%. It's the other way around actually, everyone who uses visa list now checks the emergency map.

Last week i was trying to find information on corona virus and its spread but as its distributed with different agencies, it was becoming difficult everyday to get a complete sense of whats happening. So i thought of building a website which aggregates the different sources of data and lets you stay on top of this global pandemic. It took me 24 hours to build and it now ready. I thought it will be very useful as i feel lot of us want to track this and stay vigilant. It has latest toll numbers for the Novel Coronavirus epidemic, see affected regions, stats, casualties and more. Its data is collected from WHO and other government agencies and updated everyday. I though this will be useful to people of Visa List and other who have some plans to travel, so i posted it on Reddit and it kind of went viral. I just thought it will be get more reach but oh boy, it went crazy.
First i posted a video of it and it made a comment on the link but it was hidden by their bot, after an hour and sending multiple messages to the mods, it got approved. Now things started looking good. Immediately it started pickup upvotes and comments. It reached 2k upvotes and after 2 hours everything stopped. I only realised this after an hour . It turns out my post was removed. I was dumbstruck but quickly messaged again to the mods. Fortunately, it was approved again.
After 19 hours, its around 23.5K upvotes and got me 40K users.

Reddit moderation is ridiculously against creators, for some reason they much prefer regurgitated stale content. I can understand limiting self-promotion but this is barely that.
-
2
Aren't people moderating their subbreddits by themselves? so it depends on specific subreddit?
-
10
You'll find that it is a handful of 'power hungry' moderators doing everything across multiple subs in an industry.
Post somebody elses link that's full of crappy advertising and spam then free pass. Post your own valuable content you worked hard on and is getting upvotes with even a hint of monetisation and you're shut down.
It is a toxic place for creators that need to eat.
-
4
I think it’s a running joke that most reddit mods are the worst.
-
-
1
I guess i found the fine line between self promotion and useful content
-
-
4
Nice marketing strategy, although unfortunate events.
-
1
I hope we all get through this soon!
-
-
4
Great idea and awesome execution. You inspired me to think of ways I can apply my products to current events.
-
1
Happy to help!
-
-
3
Cool, which apis are you hitting, and what does your stack look like?
-
3
question what tech did you use for the site? I see nuxt.js and express server.
-
1
NuxtJS, Vuetify, Firebase and MySQL
-
2
awesome bro. Site is nice. Using firebase with mysql is very interesting? Why did you decide to go that route? I used firebase (w/ firestore) with react and mysql with my laravel and php stuff at work but never thought about using them together. Very interested.
-
1
Just because of the use case to keep things simple and easy to build.

I think recovery rate is overly pessimistic if not outright incorrect.
As recovery takes weeks, the count is severely lagging comparing to infections.-

Yes you are right but that's what we have right now.

Waooh..
Nice product and super simple UI.

Thanks mate!

2
Great work and amazingly fast execution which was key! How exactly are you parsing the data? Must be a lot of unstructured data coming through?
-
2
Great use of technology for traction, I'm a fan 🤓
-
2
where do you pull this info from?
-
2
Nice! How are you converting/retargeting folks? I signed up for your email list but I didn't see much beyond that. Just going for some strong backlinks?
-
2
Congrats on this!
It's great that the mods ended up approving it, I had a similar story (I posted it here) but after lots of PMs, I couldn't help the mods see reason.
It's sad that Reddit mods usually have that binary self-promotion/no self-promotion way of view posts, it's much more complex than that, for example in your case you are just bringing value on the table without asking for anything, so it makes total sense to approve it. -
2
That’s great! I was using some pre-made IFTT setting where I’d get an email about breakouts with data from WHO. This is much better and more comprehensive!
-
2
I'll try to send a few hundred more your way. Hope you have analytics plugged in :) Should start coming through in a few minutes. Great idea!
-
1
Awesome! Thanks a lot. Can i know how you will be doing that?

This is new I'm super excited as I crossed three new milestones. The monthly revenue has crossed $7000 and the total revenue has crossed $25000. The total monthly active user has reached 360K.
The new year has brought lot of joy for the hardwork I have been doing from last one year.
I also have a personal update, where I have reached my goal of $300 per day or $9000 per month from all my microstartups. Next goal is $400 per day. Challenge accepted 👍.

Thanks. Most of the traffic comes from Google.

Amazing! Can I get 30mins Skype or Zoom with you? I'm struggling to get traffic to careermove.io
-
-
Finally i have crossed to $20k in total revenue and proud to say that Visa List is my 3rd micro startup to reach this milestone.
Two months back i crossed $5000 in monthly revenue and if i can manage to stay constant, i would reach $50K in under 6 months. This is very wishful, but looking at the traffic, i think i will be able to hit that milestone may be even early.
I have also improved the UX for Open Startup page of visa list.

You can find where you can travel with your passport tension free with Visa List

After my Visa List launch on ProductHunt, i posted a gist of my journey on Reddit and what do you know, i got a message from a some guy who said he was willing to buy Visa List for $100K.
This is not the first time i got an offer to sell Visa List, in fact i think this is the 7th time in a year. It made me think what is actually the value of Visa List and how can i decide that irrespective of whether i want to sell or not. So i did some math based on Visa List stats
- MAU : 310K
- Monthly Page Views : 650K
- Monthly Revenue : $5,000
- Growth Rate: 10%
- Yearly Revenue w/o Growth: $60,000
- Yearly Revenue w/ Growth: $106,921
Selling for $10000 would mean a loss of $6000 on the face of it but you are actually losing a lot more revenue. Usually you have to consider the lifetime value, let's say you 5 years, you can potentially make $0.5M or may be more so you are actually losing a lot.
On the other hand cash flow is more risky and there is no guarantee if it will actually survive for that long and keep the growth rate. Having said that, these acquisition offers rarely close, so 95% of the time someone is just wasting yours and their time at the same time.
I'm not saying you shouldn't sell, you can if you need cash very badly and/or you don't believe in your microstartup very strongly. No shame in admitting that, not every idea can be successful. I have more than 10 ideas didn't see the light of the day.
I believe in Visa List and wouldn't sell it for money any day but thats just me. What do you guys think?

From a purely economic point of view, the average price for this kind of saas is between 20x of current monthly free cashflow and 2x-3x of current annual earnings. So the offer is closer to the lower end but not unreasonable. But if you think you can sustainably growth it with joy you should indeed do that instead of selling it. As soon as you can emotionally detach yourself from the project you can ready to sell. Good luck, a good milestone to have!
-
3
I just sold a company this year and I can second what szferi is telling you. This isn't a mind-blowing offer but it's definitely reasonable.
If you're interested in selling, you can negotiate the closing terms too. A product as simple as yours shouldn't be hard to do due diligence on. Ask them for a 30-day closing process. $100k is a decent amount of money but it's not so much that a buyer should have trouble securing it to make a purchase.
Best of luck.
-
1
Thanks for the advice, I would actually want to Keep growing it. Btw what was the product that you sold?
-
2
Awesome. If I was in your shoes I don't think I'd sell either. You've already done a lot of the hard things with launching a business (product + revenue).
The product we sold is in my Twitter bio and starts with a "D" (https://twitter.com/LeviNunnink) ;-) . Can't say much more than that, unfortunately, due to the terms of the deal. But I can say that your offer seems to be the market rate as far as multiples for a SaaS business go.
Josh at Baremetrics recently did a great series on (almost) selling his company that has a lot of good info in it too: https://baremetrics.com/blog/5-things-i-learned-failing-to-sell-baremetrics-for-5m
-
1
Got it 😉
-
-
-
-
1
Interesting, have you sold any of your products before?
-
-
7
Well, if you have an other idea in mind, and you need cash to make it, could be a good opportunity
-
5
- 100K although is nice, it doesn't sound like life changing money.
- unless you need a large capital infusion right for another idea, and you enjoy what your working, I'd just hold off.
- You own your time right now, and set your schedule. Once you sell, you're going to start a timer for another idea that you think of to work and make cash to fill that void. Not always a bad risk to take, but just something to consider.
-
1
Thanks for your suggestions mate! I have decided not to sell.
-
3
If the offer is interesting to you, I would suggest you reach out to a broker for a free valuation.
I have worked with FEI (feinternational.com), and I had a great experience with them. The valuation will give you an idea of what the business is actually worth, based on them seeing hundreds of transactions. Their estimate will probably be better than all of us here on IH extrapolating from a smaller # of datapoints.
My gut says this is a lowball offer. My mental model for your business would be to assume profit ~= revenue and then assume it's worth 2.5x profit as a hard floor. But your business is growing and you are still beginning to exploit the opportunity, so it could quite easily be that the market for your business is closer to 4x profit or higher.
Basically, reach out to one of the reputable Web company brokers and get their valuation range. It's free and will only take a little of your time.
-
1
Thanks, will check it out
-
-
3
As others have mentioned, and you also pointed out, there is more money to be made long term. These potential earnings comes down to whether you can sustain growth or not. With $60,000 a year, I would double down on growth for now. Devise a solid marketing/content plan. Invest in ever-green type of content for travelers. Create a newsletter. Heck, maybe get some influencers involved.
-
1
Thanks, that's a good suggestion
-
-
2
I'd suggest to keep the business simply because I feel like the whole travelling/nomad lifestyle is growing FAST and your product is inside this domain. As long as you do the right thing your business will keep growing fast.
-
1
Yap not selling
-
-

Selling it is a risk too, because then you'd be expecting for one of your other 10 ideas to be successful within a specific timeframe. It seems like you just got started with this project and you have a passion for it, so why not keep growing it for another year or two, and then find ways to automate as much of it and start another project on the side?

PS I was looking around your website and found somewhat of a correction needed. For Americans traveling to Mexico, they do need a visa, but it's something that's given to them on the spot when they cross the border. The website implies that no visa is required, when in reality it is, but no application is needed.
And that's only if they plan to stay less than 180 days. If they want to stay more than that, there are two different types of visas they can apply for :)

Yes that is present in the tips section.

Definitely keep it :) I usually try to buy below 24x free cash flow. That would be considered a good deal for me :) Because you're the founder you're confident you can keep growing this. By this time next year you'll have tripled the value.
I checked your open stats. Revenue jumped quite a bit last 2 months. If you can keep growing with the same pace as the last two months you'll quadruple in value.
If you look at your entire year, 100k wouldn't be that unreasonable. I'd take the last 2 months as a risk for me as a buyer. Who knows revenue will stay at that level?

Off topic, have you considered partnering with GetYourGuide to offer tickets and tours in destinations? Seemed like it could fit your model along with Skyscanner.

That's a nice suggestion. Will look into it.

I wouldn't sell it unless you really need the money. Otherwise, this is a great opportunity and journey to make a lot more partnerships and gain new networking chances building a product so valued by its target market.

That's my plan

Sounds great. Selling makes sense if you don't have any resources to continue growing the product anymore or have other priorities.
Do you think you will prefer to sell under any other circumstances? -

Just don't! You will hit $12-$15k MRR by the end of 2020.

A profitable software business can be sold for 20 to 100 times what your profits are.
A profitable service business will be sold for three times what your profits are.

Congratulations! This a huge achievement. I know how hard it is in the early days to get things rolling and a real validation point that someone is willing to spend that amount of cash on your tool - well done!

I’ve never sold or been offered money for a business, but in terms of a fairly low offer like this and no other pressure, I would do the same.
If you keep running the business there’s a risk that it’s going to crash and burn, but there’s also a chance that it will grow way beyond the acquisition offer (the buyer surely hopes so).
If I still enjoy working on the thing and the offer isn’t a life-changing sum, personally, I’d probably want to see for myself whether I can reap the upside of my investment instead of bailing and being reimbursed basically only for the time that I’ve spent working on it.
