July 30, 2020 Hosting the first annual WPMRR Virtual Summit

Finally, a free online conference 100% focused on helping you make monthly recurring revenue work for your WordPress business.

With WordCamp US 2020 this fall officially cancelled, folks will be looking for more digital events in the coming months to attend and connect with the community.

We announced the WPMRRVS ~1 month ago before we found out that WCUS wasn't happening, but hopefully it will give WordPress professionals a place to go in its place.

Whether you're a WP pro or just want to run a better subscription business, you can register here for free. See you there!

July 23, 2020 Launched a YouTube channel

Most companies that have grown like ours have found 1 or 2 marketing channels that really worked for them and doubled down on them.

We were no different. Content/inbound marketing and community work were the 2 things we found really pushed us forward.

Now we're supplementing our great library of content with a YouTube channel filled with great WordPress tutorials.

We'll also be publishing the video version of our podcast there as well as some Recurring Revenue Roundtables (coming soon...).

Jumping into video is exciting and a little scary. Wish us luck!

June 10, 2020 Hit $1M ARR! Then...10 days later...$100K MRR!!

We just did our first month of $83,333.34+ MRR in May!

Not sure how people count $1M ARR (having one month $84K+ or needing to actually have earned an average of $84K/mo over 12 months). I'd probably lean towards the latter. Regardless, cool milestone to hit.

And then we kept going...

We did almost $100K in the past 30 days. Wow!

All credit goes to the great team around me. I've been a decent CEO and do something right but we would never be here without the hard work, dedication and drive of the folks I hired. Love my Buffs.

Also the new website has had a huge effect on accelerating us over the past ~45 days.

I'm sure a lot of folks here starting their journey in productized services will read this and think, Wow! That's incredible! Joe must be some special guy!

Nope. Totally just a normal guy haha. I honestly don't feel that much different than when I was running a company doing $20K MRR. Sure, I'm a bit wiser and understand the right levers to pull now for high impact. I'm a better leader than I was years ago. The team has grown and matured, as has our business.

But I really enjoyed running a company when it was doing $20K MRR. And I hope I still enjoy running it when it's doing $200K MRR.

I will stop rambling now but to wrap up, enjoy where you are right now in the journey. Be present, keep solving problems and eventually you'll stumble into $100K MRR too.

Wow, congrats! The new site looks great too 💪. I noticed you've got a video chat option rather than the usual text chat — how's that working for you? Has it increased the number of conversations you're having?

    1. 2

Thank you! I think it turned out pretty well too :)

It converts a fewer number of leads but more high-quality leads since folks book a call directly from it. Plus, our team doesn't have to deal with folks chatting in from livechat asking for free help on blog posts when it explicitly says we're there to talk about our services haha.

We do still have livechat on some internal pages. Now almost everyone we talk to in livechat is a hot lead.

      1. 1

        Awesome, thanks for the reply!

  2. 1

Wauw that's an awesome milestone Joe. Do you ever have the feeling you grow too fast?

    1. 2

Sometimes! But we've grown slowly for a long time and have the systems in place and a pretty scalable model for some faster growth so I'm not feeling too stressed :)

  3. 1

I just noticed you removed Stripe data, and started manual, thanks for the nice update! Long way to go man!

    1. 2

Yep! We moved our payment gateway to WooCommerce when we launched the new site and so the subscriptions now live there, not in Stripe. Annoyingly, the side effect is we don't actually add new subscriptions to Stripe anymore so we need to have this updated manually instead so we can pool Woo + Stripe + PayPal data :)

May 9, 2020 Results 10 days post-launch of new website

10 days post-launch and we've got some good news!

  • 482% increase in MRR added
  • 172% increase in discovery calls
  • 37% increase in pages / session
  • 31% increase in average session duration
  • 30% decrease in bounce rate

While this is only 10 days of post-launch data, it’s definitely an indicator that we’re moving in the right direction and the new wpbuffs.com is playing a significant role in that :)

Not a big fan of the mobile site tbh. Uses alot of different colors and fonts. As a brand image it should be uniform and trustworthy imo. Think blues and websites for banks etc..
You're obviously doing something right though. Congrats. Although surely you can start charging for updating (ie. Changing content) when you have the infrastructure in place.
    Best of luck with it.
Ps. I'd be interested to know what your top marketing channel is ? Unless you already covered that.

April 28, 2020 Launched new branding and website

Oh yeah! WP Buffs has gotten a major update. Not only have we brought WP Buffs into 2020 with fantastic new branding, but we launched a new website to boot.

While our name and domain have stayed the same, just about everything else about our digital presence has gotten a significant facelift.

And most of the work was done while I was on parental leave! So huge kudos to our whole team who got this mammoth project completed (and especially to our COO Nick for leading the charge).

I wanted to write this blog post to describe everything about the rebrand and new website. Our thought process, the whys, the different stages of design and development, the costs involved and much more.

Some new things:

Enjoy, fellow IndieHackers!

November 14, 2019 Made our first $1M in Stripe!

2.5 years using Stripe as our payment processor and we just hit our millionth dollar earned there. Wow!

We accept money via PayPal too so we technically hit this milestone a little while back. But it's awesome to see "1M" right in our Stripe dashboard for all-time revenue generated.

Huge shout out to our team. What a fantastic group of folks who work smart and hard every day. You're the best, Buffs!

Next financial milestone: 1M ARR (83K MRR).

How much of that does Stripe take?

    1. 1

~2.9%. $28,104 over this time period.

      1. 3

Joe go to them and negotiate. Depending on your MRR your can get that down. 2.5% should be your long term goal.

        1. 1

@danuyemura Ha! I didn't even know this was a thing. Will investigate. May reach back out to you if I have questions. Thanks for potentially saving me $1,000s / yr! :P

August 9, 2019 Guest appearance on the IH podcast

When I first joined the IH community a couple years ago, WP Buffs was probably doing around $10K MRR and still figuring out what it was.

Today things comes full circle as I get the opportunity to speak about our experience growing the company.

I remember back in the day listening to this podcast, hearing successful guests and wondering if, maybe someday, that would be me helping others starting out.

I think it's pretty obvious at this point, but this is a pretty special moment for me!

Tune into Courtland and I chat on the IH podcast!

July 17, 2019 Executed major price increase

We increased pricing for our care plans earlier this year, but over the past 2 months, we increased the price of care plans for all of our previously grandfathered in customers.

We increased MRR by ~10% with minimal churn because of the price increase, so this definitely went well! Onward and upward.

Until now I increased prices from linuxjobs.fr 2 times a year with major changes. I started from really low so it went well and I'm still under the market price.

April 2, 2019 Launched webinar series for WordPress professional

We're continually looking for more ways to build an audience at WP Buffs and help agency owners and freelances alike move their businesses forward.

That's why we launched WP Buffs webinars for WordPress professionals. We always want to be known for helping people grow the businesses they want and this is another way for us to have a small hand in that!

About

I wanted to get out of building WordPress websites and find a business model that allowed me to ❶ make recurring revenue every month and have predictable income, and ❷ scale into a business that was self-sufficient.
