ZephyrLifeOS

Real net worth tracking, zero bank linking

August 1, 2026 I built a budgeting app where the free tier isn't a trial in disguise — here's exactly what's in it

Most "free" budgeting apps give you a stripped demo and push you to upgrade within a week. I wanted the free tier to actually be useful long-term, so here's what's actually in it, no asterisks:

Expense logging — Log what you spend, manually. No bank linking, ever — on any tier. Slower than auto-sync, but nothing about your accounts leaves your control.

Monthly budgets by category — Set a budget per category (food, transport, whatever), track what's left in real time as you log expenses.

Savings goals with milestones — Set a target, log progress toward it, get milestone markers (25/50/75/100%) instead of just a static number.

10GB document storage — Upload and organize documents (receipts, statements, whatever) tied to your account. Not a gimped 100MB "free trial" limit.

Light & Dark themes — Both fully available on free, not locked behind a paywall like a lot of apps do with basic theming.

If you want more — a real balance sheet (assets/liabilities/income/expenses), weekly reviews, exports, multi-device sync — that's the paid tier, and I say so plainly instead of burying it. But the free tier isn't designed to feel broken until you pay.

Built solo, still actively fixing things. Genuinely want to know what's confusing or missing if you try it.

The free tier positioning is clear, but I think the real differentiator may be the deliberate tradeoff around manual logging and no bank linking. That could resonate strongly with people who prioritize control over convenience. Curious whether that’s actually what users respond to most, or if they mainly care about the generous free limits.

If you're the type who tracks everything in a spreadsheet because you don't trust bank-linked apps, I built ZephyrLifeOS as a middle ground — same manual-entry control, but with budgets, savings goals, and a real balance
