Community software for Gumroad course?
Hey IH! 👋
I'm wondering if there's a community software well-suited to accompany a Gumroad course. Do you have any recommendations in your experience?
- Does Slack cut it?
- Is Discord too noisy and unstructured?
- Is Discourse too 2008?
- Any suggestions you might have?
...all debatable but would love to hear your experienced thoughts!
I think Slack is a great place to start @logicalicy. There are some large businesses that still leverage slack for community such as Skillcrush and you can always migrate to something more comprehensive when you grow a bit larger. I know there are plenty of people here on IH working on community tools like @YCSchoolGraduate and @8bit, so you can check out these out too!

@gordon speaks truth... you can start on anything and move whenever you want. although it's better to start with one that you feel can scale, that's not always possible.
remember: real community is portable.
I'm leaning towards something that "works" over the perfect solution now. Thanks for your input! 🙂

What do you want to discuss?
Could you just have a hidden from google blog with discussion starters where you direct people to comment?
Basically, don't start with the tool. Think about the people and what they want and what they would actually use.
Thanks @rosiesherry. Tools are only a means to the end indeed. I'm only just starting out, so this was more of an exploratory question!
It'd be more a Q&A forum to further discuss topics covered in the course. One user tester knew about Slack but commented on how things get lost in Slack, so wanted to see what others have used in their communities to explore possibilities. 🙂
What I'll be looking for, very likely, is a community forum that can organise questions neatly for revisiting later. What I'll probably end up using will be something that works (e.g. Slack) and go from there — short of a different suggestion
I still love the good old Facebook Groups, but the courses I bought were all heavily marketed on the platform... might be bigger hurdle for those not using it or not wanting to.
Yes, Facebook may divide opinions, so I may try a different one... 😅 But thanks for the suggestion all the same!
