PostHog, Linear, Supabase, and Framer all use generous free tiers to drive adoption, then gate on usage and collaboration features that expand naturally with team size.

The reasons for SaaS winners' significantly greater enthusiasm for always-free tier appear to be:

  • The ability of to use it to drive brand awareness, virality and top-of-funnel volume

  • How sophisticated and successful they are at converting free customers to paid

We analyzed the 50 fastest-growing B2B SaaS companies (Brex's 2025 ranking) to understand what they're doing with plans, pricing, and monetization.

One of the first things we noticed: despite the buzz around usage-based pricing, 80% of the fastest growers still use subscriptions as their primary model. But these aren't the subscriptions of five years ago.

AI-native businesses like ElevenLabs, Runway, and Gamma have found ways to "subscriptionify" variable costs — credit bundles, overage charges, and hybrid structures that give customers predictability while letting revenue scale with usage.

Despite some frustration with subscription overload, they're necessary to provide the predictability B2B customers need
